Wildcats Pick Up Big Conference Win Over Molloy

OCEANSIDE, N.Y. - The Daemen University women's tennis team took a big step towards securing a spot in the upcoming East Coast Conference Championship tournament following a 5-2 victory over Molloy University this evening at the Set Point Indoor Racquet Club.

Daemen improved to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in the ECC, while Molloy dropped to 0-6 overall and 0-3 in the league. Daemen now needs one more league victory or a league loss by D'Youville University to secure the ECC Tournament bid. Molloy hosts D'Youville tomorrow. Daemen is looking to make its fourth-straight appearance in the four-team ECC Tournament.

The match was played under NCAA Division II scoring rules and the Daemen claimed the doubles point after winning all three matches. Daemen's No. 1 singles team of senior Frida Rubio (San Diego, Calif.) and junior Kitsa Scime (Williamsville, N.Y.) posted a 6-1 win over juniors Noor Goyvaerts and Elena Saunders. Daemen claimed the doubles point after junior Yinett Del Leon (Cape Coral, Fla.) and freshman Maya Chon (Wichita, Kan.) bested senior Camilla Caballero Abreu and freshman Alice Fartushynska 6-2 at No. 2 doubles. The Wildcats completed the doubles sweep after sophomore Carly Armitage (Rochester, N.Y.) and junior Emily Jablonski (Alden, N.Y.) outlasted junior Maggie Kutner and freshman Isabella Fortaleza and Julia Salazar, 7-6 (7-5).

Daemen picked up wins at No. 2, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 singles. Scime battled Goyvaerts at No. 2 singles. Scime took game one 6-2, before Goyvaerts responded with a 7-6 (7-4) win in game two. Scime regouped and took game three, 10-7. Del Leon, Armitage and Chon all won in straight sets.

MATCH NOTES
  • The match marked the 11th all-time meeting between the two schools. Daemen has prevailed in seven of the last nine meetings and the Wildcats own a 7-4 advantage in the series.
     
  • Scime recorded her 33rd career singles win. She ranks fifth among Daemen's all-time leaders in career singles wins. She is 10-2 in singles play this year (8-0 in dual matches) and is now 28-9 in her last 37 singles matches dating back to the end of her freshman season.
     
  • Rubio and Scime have won seven of their last nine doubles matches and are 8-4 on the year.
     
  • Del Leon and Armitage both recorded their fifth singles win of the year, while Chon improved to 4-4.
     
  • De Leon and Chon have won their last five doubles matches and are 5-1 on the year.
     
  • Daemen returns to action Sunday (Oct. 15) when it hosts Le Moyne College in a non-conference match at Miller Tennis Center.
