Wildcats Fall To League Leading Knights

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. - The Daemen University women's tennis team suffered a 7-0 loss to Queens College this evening at the Miller Tennis Center. Daemen dropped to 5-5 overall and 2-2 in the East Coast Conference. Queens, which entered the match atop the ECC standings, remained unbeaten on the year and improved to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in the league. The Knights secured the No. 1 seed in the upcoming ECC Tournament with the win.

Despite the loss, Daemen clinched a spot in the four-team ECC Tournament after D'Youville suffered a 6-1 loss to St. Thomas Aquinas College this evening.

The match was played under NCAA Division I/II scoring rules and the Queens claimed the doubles point after winning all three matches. Daemen's No. 1 singles team of senior Frida Rubio (San Diego, Calif.) and junior Kitsa Scime (Williamsville, N.Y.) suffered a 6-4 loss to graduate student Maja Makal and junior Saga Berggren. Rubio and Scime jumped out to a 3-2 lead in the match, but Makal and Berggren won the next two games to take a 4-3 lead. They split the next two games, before Queens won the match 6-4. Daemen's No. 2 doubles team of junior Yinett Del Leon (Cape Coral, Fla.) and freshman Maya Chon (Wichita, Kan.) suffered just their third loss of the year, falling to graduate student Eva Rivioal and sophomore Apolline Lamy, 6-1.

Rubio battled Makel, the ECC Preseason Co-Player of the Year, at No. 1 singles, but fell 6-2, 6-3. Scime suffered a 6-2, 6-1 loss to junior Caroline Hany-Fawzy at No. 2 singles. Daemen freshman Maya Chon (Wichita, Kan.) turned in a strong effort at No. 5 singles, dropping a 6-4, 6-2 decision to sophomore Kayla Taszymowicz.
