Wildcats Cap Fall Regular Season With Loss To St. Thomas Aquinas

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. - The Daemen University women's tennis team closed out the fall portion of its 2023-24 regular-season schedule with 6-1 loss to St. Thomas Aquinas College this evening at the Miller Tennis Center.Daemen dropped to 5-6 overall and 2-3 in the East Coast Conference. STAC, the defending ECC Tournament champion, improved to 7-1 overall a d 4-1 in the ECC.

Both teams have qualified for the four-team ECC Tournament, which will take place Oct. 27-28 at Queens College. Daemen will be the No. 4 seed and will face top-seeded Queens in the semifinals on Oct. 27. STAC will be seeded second and face third-seeded District of Columbia in the other semifinal.

Tonight's match was played under NCAA Division I/II scoring rules and the STAC claimed the doubles point after winning all three matches. Daemen's No. 1 singles team of senior Frida Rubio (San Diego, Calif.) and junior Kitsa Scime (Williamsville, N.Y.) suffered a 6-2 loss to seniors Ebba Rosberg and Samanta Robles.

Rubio battled Rosberg, the ECC Preseason Co-Player of the Year, at No. 1 singles, but fell 6-0, 6-2. Scime snapped a two-game losing streak at No. 2 singles following a 6-1, 3-6, 10-7 win over graduate student Viktoria Pavlovets.

MATCH NOTES
  • The match marked the 13th all-time meeting between the two schools. STAC has prevailed in all 13 meetings.
     
  • Scime improved to 11-4 on the season. She ranks fifth among Daemen's all-time leaders in career singles wins (34) and is now 29-11 in her last 40 singles matches dating back to the end of her freshman season.
     
  • Rubio, the lone senior on the team, was honored for her commitment to the program over the past four years during a pre-match ceremony.
