Cats Cruise To Seventh ECC Sweep Of The Season

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Playing in their final regular season road match of the year, the Daemen University women's volleyball team won their 18th straight match over Roberts Wesleyan University in a 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-22) victory to move to 19-5 overall and 9-0 in East Coast Conference play. The Redhawks drop to 6-12 on the year and 2-6 in ECC action. With the win, the league-leading Wildcats improve their regular season ECC win streak to 32 straight matches, a streak that dates back to Nov. 10, 2019. 

Daemen out-hit Roberts Wesleyan 43 to 29 on the day and finished with a .257 hitting percentage while holding the Redhawks to just .069 through the match. Daemen senior right side Giselle Giraud (Orlando, Fla.) led all players on the floor with 10 kills on 19 attacks for a .368 hitting percentage.

IMPACT PLAYERS

  • Freshman outside hitter Charlotte Koerber (Munich, Germany) posted a match-high 11.5 points off nine kills, nine digs, two aces and an assisted block. 
  • After picking up her fifth ECC Defensive Player of the Week honor this week, senior libero Jasmine Brundage (East Aurora, N.Y.) led all players with 17 digs (5.67 digs/set) and added an ace and an assist on the day.
  • Junior right side Kate Ryan (Buffalo, N.Y.) posted eight kills for the second straight match while hitting at a .429 clip.
  • Senior middle Vanessa Kuliga (Glenview, Ill.) finished with seven kills on 12 attacks for a .333 hitting percentage while adding two block assists, two assists, two digs, one solo block and one ace for 10 points. 
  • Senior setters Dunja Masic (McHenry, Ill.) and Olivia Alessi (East Aurora, N.Y.) split time running the Wildcat offense again today. Masic finished with 18 assists, eight digs, one ace and one kill, while Alessi totaled 14 assists, eight digs and one ace. 

GAME NOTES

  • Daemen took the first set 25-17 after out-hitting the Redhawks 14 to 8 for a .290 hitting percentage in the first and totaled four blocks to Roberts' one in the set.
  • Led offensively by Ryan who tallied five of Daemen's 13 second-set kills, the Wildcats won the second set 25-17 in the Redhawks' highest hitting  set where they tallied 12 kills.
  • Koerber posted six of her nine total kills in the third set that ended up being a race to 25 for both teams. The Wildcats outlasted the Redhawks 25-22 to take the third and final set and end the match in a clean sweep for the 13th match of the season. 
  • The Wildcats have now won 18 straight matches against the Redhawks in a streak dating back to October of 2015. Daemen owns a 37-20 overall record over their longtime rival. 
  • The hunt for 1,000 career kills still looms for fifth year senior Maggie Burns (Louisville, Ky.)!! Including her one year at Urbana, Burns is now just nine kills away from her 1,000th after totaling three kills this afternoon for a grand total of 991 in her five year collegiate career. She notched her 1,000th career dig earlier this season.
UP NEXT
The Wildcats return to Lumsden Gymnasium next weekend for their final weekend of regular season play as they host Queens College and Molloy University in a pair of 11 AM matches next Saturday and Sunday (Nov. 4-5).
