Four Players Score In Double Figures In 81-68 Exhibition Loss To Syracuse

Daemen Outscores The Orange 41-32 In The Second Half

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Six players scored in double figures to lead Syracuse University to an 81-68 victory over Daemen University in an exhibition men's basketball game tonight at the JMA Wireless Dome on the SU campus.

It marked the second of two exhibition games against Division I programs the Division II Wildcats have played as they prepare for the start of the 2023-24 season. The Wildcats battled the University at Buffalo earlier this week, only to suffer a 71-67 defeat.

IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Four players scored in double figures for the Wildcats.
  • Graduate student guard/forward Joey Atkins (Watervliet, N.Y.) connected on 6-of-11 shots and scored 16 points.
  • Senior Dylan Fasoyiro (Houston, Tex.) drilled four three-pointers and totaled 14 points.
  • Senior Nick MacDonald (Amherst, N.Y.) added 12 points, while classmate Justin Hemphill (Buffalo, N.Y.) chipped in 10 points in 17 minutes off the bench.
  • Sophomore Justin Taylor made three three-pointers and scored 12 points for the Orange, while classmate Quadir Copeland added 12 points, five rebounds, nine assists and four steals.

GAME NOTES
  • Daemen trailed 49-27 at the break and outscored the Orange 41-32 in the second half.
  • Daemen hung with the Orange early on and trailed by only nine points, 25-16, after freshman Zach Philipkoski (New Hartford, N.Y.) drilled a three-pointer with 10:34 left before halftime.
  • The Orange responded with 11 unanswered points and took a 36-16 lead following a dunk by sophomore Peter Carey with 6:31 left before intermission.
  • A three-pointer by Fasoyiro cut the lead to 38-25 at the 4:45 mark, but the Orange closed the half on an 11-2 run and took a 49-27 lead into intermission.
  • Daemen outscored the Orange 11-5 over the first four minutes of the second half and later cut the lead to 15 points, 59-44, following back-to-back buckets by Atkins with just under 14 minutes left.
  • The Wildcats cut the lead to 12 points, 75-63, with three minutes left, but would come no closer.
  • Daemen shot 51-percent (15-29) from the field after halftime and finished 25-60 (42%) from the field overall. The Wildcats made 11-of-24 from three-point land and made 7-of-9 free throws.
  • SU shot 53-percent overall (34-of-64) and made 8-of-25 from downtown. The hosts canned 5-of-6 from the charity stripe.
     
NEXT JUMP BALL
Daemen officially opens the 2023-24 season next weekend (Nov. 3-5) when it makes the trek to Western Canada to take part in the Conference Commissioners Association (CCA) D2 Canadian Tipoff Classic. The Wildcats will take on Western Washington University, tournament host Simon Fraser University and Seattle Pacific University during the three-day event.
