Wildcats Fall To Nationally-Ranked Mavericks In Season Finale

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Senior Daniel Rodriguez totaled a goal and two assists to lead Mercy University to a 7-1 victory over Daemen University in East Coast Conference men's soccer action this afternoon at Mercy Field. It marked the regular season finale for both teams.

Daemen, which needed a win today to keep its playoff hopes alive, saw its season come to an end and fell to 3-11-1 overall and 2-6-0 in the ECC. Mercy, which is ranked 25th nationally by the United Soccer Coaches, improved to 9-3-5 overall and 5-0-3 in the league. The Mavericks have qualified for the six-team ECC Championship tournament, which begins this week.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The game remained scores until the 27th minute when Rodriguez gave the hosts a 1-0 lead.
  • Mercy took control with three goals in the final 10 minutes of the first half. Junior Luis Silva scored at 34:53, and freshman Marius Pignat-Larsen followed with a goal exactly five minutes later to give the Mavericks a 3-0 lead.
  • The hosts took a 4-0 lead into halftime after sophomore Johannes Hanken Tjostheim scored with just 3:17 left before the break.
  • Mercy built a 7-0 lead before Daemen avoided the shutout following a goal by senior Dennis Montero Guerrero (Weingarten, Germany) with 8:39 left to play. Sophomore Gaëtan François (Limoges, France) assisted on the goal.
  • Mercy outshot the Wildcats 12-2 in the first half and finished with a 21-7 edge in shots overall. The Mavericks posted a 16-3 edge in shots on goal.
  • Senior Harry Firth (Reading, England) played the first half in net for the Wildcats and made four saves. Junior Arturo Bustamante (South Gate, Calif.) played the second half and registered five saves. Junior Eirik Elvestad was credited with two saves for the Mavericks.
GAME NOTES
  • Today's contest marked the 10th all-time meeting between the two schools. Mercy has prevailed in all 10 meetings.
  • Freshman Elijah Douglas (Clarence, N.Y.) closed out the year as the team leader in goals (4) and points (10) for the Wildcats.
  • Montero Guerrero scored a goal in three of the final four games and finished the year with seven points.
  • Daemen scored 18 goals this season and 15 were scored by newcomers.
