Mercy Brings An End To Daemen's 11 Game Unbeaten Streak

Wildcats Finish Second In ECC, Will Host ECC Tournament Semifinal Match Nov. 5

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Senior Madison Rosa scored two goals to lead Mercy University to a 2-0 victory over Daemen University in East Coast Conference women's soccer action today at Mercy Field. It marked the regular-season finale for both teams. Both teams have qualified for the ECC Championship tournament, which begins this week.

The Wildcats saw their 11-match unbeaten streak come to end and dropped to 8-4-3 overall and 6-1-1 in the ECC. Daemen, which is ranked ninth in the latest United Soccer Coaches East Region poll, finished one point behind ECC regular season champion Roberts Wesleyan University (10-1-3, 6-0-2 ECC).

Mercy, the defending ECC Tournament champion and preseason favorite to win the league again this season, won for the fifth time in the past six games and improved to 8-4-3 overall and 5-1-2 in the league.

Roberts Wesleyan and Daemen have earned first-round byes in the ECC Tournament and will host semifinal round games on Sunday, Nov. 5. Quarterfinal round games will take place Nov. 2. No. 3 Mercy will host No. 6 D'Youville University and No. 4 Molloy University will host No. 5 Queens College.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The hosts opened the scoring just 1:38 into the contest following a Daemen turnover. Rosa took control of the turnover just out of  the Daemen box and lofted a shot over Daemen netminder Becca Schultz (Grand Island, N.Y.) that hit the bottom of the crossbar and into the Daemen net.
  • Daemen nearly evened the score in the 11th minute when sophomore Kylie Miranto (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) got in behind the Mercy defense, but sent a low shot from the right side just outside the left post.
  • Schultz came up with two big saves in the 22nd minute to keep it a one-goal game, but the Mavericks were able to double their lead in the 31st minute.
  • This time Rose took possession of the ball on the left flank, got around a Daemen defender and sent a shot past Schultz into the upper right corner.
  • Daemen nearly cut the lead in half in the 83rd minute, but a shot by senior Brooke Amato (Grand Island, N.Y.) following a Mercy turnover went off the post and out of play.
  • Mercy posted a 13-2 edge in shots in the first half and the hosts finished with a 26-7 advantage overall. The hosts held a 14-0 edge in shots on goal. 
  • Schultz, who had held Daemen's last 11 opponents to one goal or less, went the distance in net for the Wildcats and equaled her career-high for saves (12). Sophomore Kamy Anaya did not record a save for the Mavericks.
GAME NOTES
  • Today's contest marked the 12th all-time meeting between the two schools. Mercy has prevailed in 11 of the 12 meetings.
  • Miranto was held without a point for just the fifth time this season. She has totaled a league-high 16 goals and 36 points and entered today's contest ranked second among all NCAA Division II players in goals per game (1.14) and fourth in points per game (2.57).
  • Her 16 goals rank as the fourth most in a season by a Daemen player in program history. Jamie Boyer netted a school record 20 in 2018. Her 36 points rank as the sixth most in a season by a Daemen player in program history.
  • Schultz has allowed just eight goals over the last 12 games and leads the ECC in save percentage (.872).
  • Daemen will be making its third-straight and fourth overall appearance in the ECC Tournament. The Wildcats are looking for their first ECC Tournament title.
  • Daemen will host an ECC Tournament game for the first time in program history.
