Firebirds Hand Wildcats First Conference Loss

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Daemen University women's tennis team suffered a 5-2 loss to the University of the District of Columbia in an East Coast Conference match played this afternoon at the UDC Tennis Facility. The host Firebirds improved to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the league, while Daemen dropped to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in the ECC.

The match was played under NCAA Division II scoring rules and the Daemen claimed the doubles point after winning two of the three matches. Daemen's No. 1 singles team of senior Frida Rubio (San Diego, Calif.) and junior Kitsa Scime (Williamsville, N.Y.) posted a 6-4 win over senior Sophia Bellucco and freshman Polina Zelentsova. Daemen claimed the doubles point after junior Yinett Del Leon (Cape Coral, Fla.) and freshman Maya Chon (Wichita, Kan.) outlasted senior Mariona Franco and junior Laura Marie 7-5 at No. 2 doubles. The hosts Firebirds prevailed at No. 3 doubles, as junior Claudia Bahamon and sophomore Célia Bastin bested sophomore Carly Armitage (Rochester, N.Y.) and junior Emily Jablonski (Alden, N.Y.), 6-0.

UDC took five of the six singles matches. Scime claimed the lone win during singles action for the Wildcats, as she got past Zelentsova, 6-4, 6-3. Armitage turned in a solid effort at No. 4 singles, but suffered a 6-3, 6-3 loss to Bellucco.

MATCH NOTES
  • The matched marked the 11th all-time meeting between Daemen and UDC. The Firebirds have prevailed in all 11 matches.
     
  • Scime recorded her 32nd career singles win. She ranks fifth among Daemen's all-time leaders in career singles wins. She is 9-2 in singles play this year and is now 27-9 in her last 36 singles matches dating back to the end of her freshman season.
     
  • Rubio and Scime have won six of their last eight doubles matches and are 7-4 on the year.
     
  • De Leon and Chon have won their last four doubles matches and are 4-1 on the year.
     
  • Daemen was schedule to play at Division I Lafayette College tomorrow (Oct. 7), but the match was canceled due to the forecast of inclement weather. The Wildcats now return to action Wednesday (Oct. 11) at Allegheny College.
