Daemen Keglers Go 3-2 During Opening Day Of The Mercyhurst Invitational

ERIE, Pa. - The Daemen University women's bowling team won three of its five opening-day matches at the 2023 Mercyhurst Invitational today. The two-day tournament is being hosted by Mercyhurst University and is taking place at Rolling Meadow Lanes. It features nine schools: Daemen, Mercyhurst, D'Youville University, Mount Aloysius College, Niagara University, Penn State Behrend, Pitt.-Bradford, Roberts Wesleyan University and Wilmington (Del.) University.

Today's action featured five traditionally scored matches. The Wildcats posted a pin total of 4,182. Wilmington sits atop the leaderboard after posting a total pinfall of 4,595. Niagara (4,568), Mercyhurst (4.421), Roberts Wesleyan (4,306) and Daemen rounded out the top five

It marks the 2023-24 season-opening tournament for Daemen.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Daemen opened the day with an 881-812 loss to Niagara, before posting three-straight wins over Wilmington (866-818), nationally-ranked Mercyhurst (850-843) and Pitt.-Bradford (884-760). The Wildcats closed the day with an 853-770- loss to Pen-State Behrend.
  • Daemen snapped a six-match losing streak to Mercyhurst, which enters the season as the preseason favorite to repeat as East Coast Conference champions.
  • Graduate student Caitlyn Nowak (West Seneca, N.Y.), who earned Most Valuable Player honors at this tournament two years ago, played in four matches and posted a team-best 180.3 average. She rolled a 200 in the loss to Niagara.
  • Senior Mollie Gizicki (Brighton, Mich.) also had a solid day, as she competed in all five matches and posted a 175.2 average. She rolled a team-best 202 in the win over Pitt.-Bradford.
  • Freshman Cassidy Papero (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) appeared in all five matches in her collegiate debut. She rolled a 181 in the loss to Penn-State Behrend and posted a 167.4 average.
  • Fellow rookie Chelsea Porga (Welland, Ontario) competed in three matches and rolled a team-high 191 in the win over Wilmington. She posted a 174.7 average.
  • Freshmen Sabrina Palmer (Waterloo, N.Y.), Lydia Murphy (Williamsville, N.Y.) and Brenna Forsha (Tonawanda, N.Y.) also made their collegiate debuts today. Palmer bowled in two matches and posted a 166.5 average. Murphy bowled in the final two matches and finished with a 177.5 average. Forsha bowled in the first and last match and posted a 134.0 average.
  • Senior Emma Smith (Williamsville, N.Y.) and sophomore Bailey Glass (North Tonwanda, N.Y.) rounded out today's bowlers. Smith bowled a 172 in the loss to Niagara, while Glass posted a 156 in the win over Pitt.-Bradford.
