Daemen Tops STAC 3-0 In First Ever Meeting

SPARKILL, N.Y. – Five up, five down!! The Daemen University women's volleyball won their fifth straight conference match, and their seventh straight match in a row, topping first-year program St. Thomas Aquinas 3-0 (25-13, 25-15, 25-23) in the first ever meeting between the two teams on Sunday morning. With the victory, the Wildcats move to 14-4 on the year and 5-0 in East Coast Conference play. Daemen's regular season conference win streak extends to 28, with the Wildcats last regular season ECC loss coming on November 10, 2019.
 
STAC drops to 3-8 on the season and 1-4 in the ECC. The first-year Spartans picked up their first ever conference victory yesterday in a 3-1 win over D'Youville.
 
IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Senior right side Giselle Giraud (Orlando, Fla.) finished with eight kills and one error on 11 attacks for a .636 hitting percentage. The senior added five digs and two assists to her stat line.
  • Junior middle Amelia Armstrong (River Falls, Wisc.) totaled eight kills while hitting at a .400 clip.
  • Daemen's September Female Athlete of the Month Charlotte Koerber (Munich, Germany) finished with seven kills and just one error on 12 attacks for a season-high .500 hitting percentage, adding eight digs on the day.
  • Senior setter Dunja Masic (McHenry, Ill.) tallied 38 assists (12.67 assists/set), two aces, two digs, two blocks and two kills in the win. Senior libero Jasmine Brundage (East Aurora, N.Y.) led the match with 12 digs (4.0 digs/set) and two aces.
  • Senior middle Vanessa Kuliga (Glenview, Ill.) totaled five kills, three digs, two blocks, one ace and an assist.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas' Jaizahir Marrero-George, the ECC leader in kills per set, led all players with 14 kills on the day, and was the only player to tally double digit kills. 
GAME NOTES
  • The hits were on display for the Wildcats today! Eight different Wildcats recorded hits as Daemen out-killed STAC 44-23, hitting at a .326 clip. The Wildcat defense held the Spartans to a .165 hitting percentage on the day.
  • This marked Daemen's fifth sweep in the last seven matches. The Wildcats have swept four of five ECC matches this season.
  • The hunt for 1,000 career kills continues for fifth year outside hitter Maggie Burns (Louisville, Ky.)! Including her one season spent at Urbana University, Burns has totaled 937 kills in her five-year career. She finished with six kills, nine digs, two aces, two assists and a block tonight.
UP NEXT
The Wildcats will play another road match on Thursday, traveling across town to play at D'Youville in a 7 PM tilt. Daemen returns to Lumsden Gymnasium this weekend for a non-conference match against Saint Rose on Saturday at 4 PM.
