The match was played before a crowd of over 400 at Williamsville South High School. Daemen, which was making its first-ever appearance in the ECC Tournament championship game, dropped to 9-5-3 on the year. The Wildcats advanced to the title game following a 2-0 victory over third-seeded Mercy University last weekend. Molloy, which was playing in its fourth-straight ECC Tournament title game, claimed the title for the third time in program history. The Lions also took home the trophy in 2019 and 2021 (there was no tournament in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic). Molloy improves to 11-4-5 and earns the ECC's automatic bid to the upcoming NCAA Division II Championship tournament. The entire NCAA field will be announced Monday at 6:30 p.m. on NCAA.com. HIGHLIGHTS Molloy benefitted from a Daemen miscue to take a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute of play. Senior Sarah Tappeto sent a ball into the Daemen box from the right corner, and the ball ricocheted off a Daemen defender and into the net. The goal was recorded as an own goal. Daemen had two solid chances to score near the 30 minute mark of the game, but freshman netminder Elyse Muñoz came up with a save on shots by senior Brooke Amato (Grand Island, N.Y.) and freshman Magda Carpenter (Lebanon, Conn.). The Lions took a 1-0 lead into halftime and double their lead just 6:30 into the second half. Again, it was Tappeto who created the scoring opportunity, as she sent a ball towards the Daemen net from the right flank, which was one-timed into the net by sophomore Olivia Ingenito. Molloy nearly took a 3-0 lead in the 65th minute, but a shot by Ingenito went off the right goal post. The Molloy defense frustrated a Daemen offensive attacked that entered the match with a league-high 35 goals, as the Lions did not allow a shot on goal in the second half. Molloy posted a 7-2 advantage in shots in the second half and the visitors finished with a 13-6 advantage in total shots and a 5-2 edge in shots on goal. Sophomore Becca Schultz (Grand Island, N.Y.) posted four saves for the Wildcats. Muñoz, who was named the tournament MVP, recorded two saves. GAME NOTES It marked the 11th all-time meeting between the two teams, but the first-ever post-season meeting. Molloy now owns a 7-4 advantage in the all-time series. Kylie Miranto (North Tonawanda, N.Y.), the 2023 ECC Offensive Player of the Year, was limited to just one shot today and was held pointless for just the sixth time all season. She has totaled a league-high 16 goals and 37 points and entered today's contest ranked sixth among all NCAA Division II players in both goals per game (1.00) and points per game (2.31). Her 16 goals rank as the fourth most in a season by a Daemen player in program history. Jamie Boyer netted a school record 20 in 2018. Her 37 points rank as the sixth most in a season by a Daemen player in program history. Schultz has allowed just 10 goals over the last 14 games and enter the contest as the ECC leader in save percentage (.877). Daemen was making its third-straight and fourth overall appearance in the ECC Tournament.
