Wildcats Cap 2023 With Double Overtime Victory At Saint Anselm

Hemphill's Career Day Paces A Balanced Attack

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Talk about closing out 2023 with a bang. The Daemen University men's basketball team outlasted Saint Anselm College, 112-109, in double overtime this afternoon in a non-conference game played at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium on the Saint Anselm campus.

It marked the first time since the 2017-18 season that Daemen has played in a game that went to double overtime. The Wildcats posted a 102-98 win over Molloy at Lumsden Gymnasium the last time they went to double overtime on Feb. 16, 2018.

Sophomore Justin Glover (Buffalo, N.Y.) hit a clutch three-pointer at the end of regulation to force the extra time and senior Justin Hemphill (Buffalo, N.Y.) scored a career-high 27 points and grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds to lead a balanced Daemen attack today.

Daemen, which is ranked eighth in the Division II College Sports Communicators (D2CSC) East Region poll, has won nine of its last 11 games and improved to 10-4 overall. Saint Anselm, which has advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament 10 of the last 11 years, dropped to 4-7.

IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Six players scored in double figures for the Wildcats. It marked the second time this season that six players have scored in double figures in game for Daemen.
  • Hemphill established new career highs for minutes played (42), field goals made (11), field goals attempted (22), points (27) and rebounds (16). He also contributed three assists, three blocks and four steals.
  • Fifth-year senior Nick MacDonald (Amherst, N.Y.) played a career-high 47 minutes, went a perfect 10-of-10 from the free throw line and scored a career-high 21 points.
  • Senior Dylan Fasoyiro (Houston, Tex.) scored 21 points before fouling out late in the game.
  • Glover played 38 minutes off the bench, drilled four three-pointers, and totaled 18 points and a career-high eight assists with just one turnover.
  • Senior Andrew Mason (Webster, N.Y.) hit two clutch three-pointers late in the game and finished with 12 points and three assists.
  • Graduate student Joey Atkins (Watervliet, N.Y.) contributed a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
  • Fifth-year senior Tyler Arbuckle played all 50 minutes for the Hawks and totaled a career-high 39 points and eight rebounds.

GAME NOTES
  • It marked just the fourth all-time meeting between the two teams. Daemen has prevailed in the last two meetings and owns a 3-1 advantage in the series.
  • The Hawks went 22-8 (15-5 NE-10) and claimed the NE-10 Tournament title last year. Saint Anselm hosted the East Regional of the NCAA Division II Tournament last year but was upset by Caldwell in the opening round. The Hawks were voted second in the NE-10 preseason coaches' poll.
  • Daemen jumped out to a 10-2 lead, but the Hawks chipped at the lead and eventually tied the game at 15-15 seven minutes into the game.
  • Daemen held a 28-22 lead with just over eight minutes left in the first half, but the Hawks outscored the Wildcats 22-10 the rest of the half and the hosts took a 44-38 lead into the break.
  • Saint Anselm took its largest lead of the game, 55-43, following a triple by Arbuckle four minutes into the second half, but the Wildcats answered with an 18-3 run. Back-to-back three-pointers by freshman Zach Philipkoski (New Harford, N.Y.) and MacDonald capped the run and gave the Wildcats a 61-58 lead with 11:29 left.
  • Daemen later took a 74-69 lead following a layup by Hemphill with 7:04 left, but the Hawks answered with a 14-4 run and the hosts took an 83-78 lead after sophomore Josh Morissette converted a conventional three-point play with 2:47 to play.
  • The Hawks had an 84-81 lead with 14 seconds left, but freshman Ryan Heath (Rochester, N.Y.) intercepted an outlet pass following an in-bounds play under the Daemen basket and MacDonald later fed Glover, who drilled a three-pointer with :05 seconds left to tie the game at 84-84. A buzzer-beating three-pointer by the hosts was just off the the front rim after that.
  • Neither team led by more than two points in the first overtime and the teams headed to the second overtime tied at 97-97.
  • The second overtime was tied at 105-105 when MacDonald grabbed an offensive rebound following a missed free throw and scored to give the Wildcats the lead. Hemphill blocked a Saint Anselm shot that the other end and Glover scored with 1:46 left to give the visitors a 109-105 lead.
  • Saint Anselm got two free throws to cut it to two points, but Hemphill scored with 1:11 left to give Daemen a 111-107 lead.
  • Hemphill came up with a steal on the next Saint Anselm possession and MacDonald came up with another big offensive rebound following a missed free throw with 35 seconds left. Mason then made 1-of-2 free throws with 25 seconds left to give the Wildcats a 112-107 left.
  • Arbuckle made two free throws with 19 seconds left and the hosts forced a turnover with on Daemen's next possession. Arbuckle had two three-point attempts in the waning seconds but was off the mark with both.
  • Daemen finished 39-for-90 (43%) from the field overall and made 11-of-24 from downtown. The Wildcats made 23-of-36 from the charity stripe.
  • Saint Anselm shot 49-percent (36-of-74) from the field overall, but made just 7-of-26 from downtown. The Hawks canned 30-of-38 from the charity stripe.
  • The Wildcats collected 26 offensive rebounds and posted a 20-13 edge in second-chance points.
