Women's Tennis Opens Spring Slate With Loss To Mercyhurst

ERIE, Pa. - The Daemen University women's tennis team opened the spring portion of its 2022-23 schedule with a 7-0 loss to Mercyhurst University this evening in a match played at Westwood Racquet Club.

Daemen, which was playing its first match since suffering loss to top-seeded St. Thomas Aquinas College in the semifinals of the East Coast Conference Championship on Oct. 28, dropped to 3-8 on the year. Mercyhurst improved to 2-1.

Mercyhurst took all three doubles matches to earn the one point as per NCAA Division II scoring. The host Lakers would go on to sweep all six singles matches as well.
The most competitive matches came at No. 2 and No. 3 singles. Daemen sophomore Kitsa Scime (Williamsville, N.Y.) battled sophomore Roisin Murphy at second singles. Murphy outlasted Scime, 7-5 in the first set, before Scime evened the match with a 6-3 win in set two. Murphy answered with a 6-1 victory in set three to take the match. Daemen sophomore Yinett Del Leon (Cape Coral, Fla.) went up against senior Nadja Ostojic at No. 3 singles. Ostojic opened the match with a 6-3 win in set one and earned the win with a 6-4 victory in set two.

Scime was coming off a solid fall season in which she posted a 9-4 record in singles play.

#2 – Nadja Ostojic & Kiersten Brown (Mercyhurst) defeat Yinett Del Leon & Carly Armitage (Daemen), 6-0
#3 – Valentine Budin & Sara Bertolez (Mercyhurst) defeat Ailish McDevitt  & Mackenzie Schayes (Daemen), 6-1

#2 – Murphy defeats Scime, 7-5, 3-6, 6-1
#3 – Ostojic defeats Del Leon, 6-3, 6-4
#4 – Brown defeats Armitage, 6-2, 6-0
#5 - Bertolez defeats Schayes, 6-1, 6-0
#6 - Budin defeats McDevitt, 6-0, 6-0
