Wildcats Down Saints In Regular Season Finale

Daemen Earns No. 2 Seed And First Round Bye In ECC Tournament

AMHERST, N.Y. – Junior Justin Hemphill (Buffalo, N.Y.) totaled a career-high 24 points in just 23 minutes off the bench to lead the Daemen University men's basketball team to an 83-74 victory over D'Youville University this evening at Lumsden Gymnasium on the Daemen campus.

It marked the regular season finale for both teams. Daemen, which has won seven straight and 16 of its last 18 games, moved to 19-7 overall and 12-4 in the East Coast Conference. Daemen finished in second place in the final ECC regular season standings and will be seeded second in the upcoming ECC Championship tournament. The top two seeds earn a first round bye, while seeds three through six will play quarterfinal round games on Wednesday (March 1). St. Thomas Aquinas, the ECC regular season champion, is the top seed and will host the semifinals and championship game March 4-5.

D'Youville, which is not eligible for the ECC Tournament, closed out the yearvat 4-21 overall and 3-13 in the league.

The Wildcats entered the game ranked 10th in the second NCAA East Region poll released earlier this week.

IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Hemphill, the reigning ECC Defensive Player of the Week, connected on 10-of-14 shots and also totaled nine rebounds, two assists, three steals and a career-high six blocks. Hemphill entered the game as the ECC leader in field goal percentage and is now shooting 61-percent (91-149) on the year.
  • Junior Dylan Fasoyiro (Houston, Tex.) scored 10 first-half points and finished with 16 points and eight rebounds.
  • Senior Nick MacDonald (Amherst, N.Y.) added 12 points and five boards, while junior Andrew Mason (Webster, N.Y.) went 2-of-4 from downtown and totaled eight points and four assists. Mason entered the game ranked second among all NCAA Division II players in three-point field goal percentage and is now shooting 51-percent (74-for-146) from behind the arc on the year.
  • Senior guard Ryan Salzberg (Manlius, N.Y.) also netted eight points, while redshirt senior Joey Atkins (Watervliet, N.Y.) added eight points, nine rebounds and two blocks.
  • Graduate student Will Kondrat led the Saints with 32 points and 13 rebounds.
GAME NOTES
  • Daemen has prevailed in all 11 meetings between the two schools.
  • Daemen has won at least 19 games in 11 of the last 12 seasons. That span encompasses the end of Daemen's NAIA era, its NCAA transition period and the first eight seasons of full NCAA Division II membership. The Wildcats have won 72% of their contests, going 246-97 in that span.
  • Daemen finished the regular season as the ECC leader in fewest points allowed per game (65.3). Daemen limited 16 of its 26 opponents to less than 70 points. The Wildcats were 14-2 this season when they limited their opponent to less than 70 points.
  • Daemen held a 12-10 lead eight minutes into the game when a three-pointer by Salzberg sparked a 10-0 run by the hosts. A layup Hemphill with 8:50 left before halftime capped the run and gave Daemen a 22-10 lead.
  • The Wildcats later took a 15-point lead, 29-14, following an Atkins dunk with 6:53 left before the break.
  • D'Youville cut the lead to single digits, 35-26, after Kondrat made two free throws at the 3:32 mark and the Wildcats would go on to take a 42-34 lead into the break.
  • Daemen outscored the Saints 14-7 over the first seven minutes of the second half and took a 56-41 lead after Salzberg drilled his second three-pointer of the game with 13:45 left.
  • The Daemen lead eventually grew to 20 points, 66-46, after freshman Justin Glover (Buffalo, N.Y.) hit a jumper with just over eight minutes left and the hosts maintained a double-digit lead until the final minute.
  • Daemen shot 50-percent (16-for-32) from the field in the first half and finished 46-percent (31-for-68) from the field overall. The Wildcats went 8-for-18 from three-point land and made 13-of-24 free throws.
