Wildcats Suffer Loss To Walsh In The First Home Game In Program History

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Sophomore Kathleen Coomes totaled six goals and two assists and junior Isabella Kelty added two goals and six assists to lead Walsh University to a 21-2 victory over Daemen University in non-conference women's lacrosse action this afternoon. It marked the first ever home game for Daemen, which will play its home games this season at the Medaille Sports Complex at Buffalo Color Park while Daemen awaits construction of the West Royal Park athletic complex.

The setback comes just two days after Daemen posted a 14-10 win at Lake Erie College in the first game in program history. The 2023 campaign marks the inaugural season for the program. Daemen officially announced it was adding women's lacrosse as a varsity sport in June of 2021.

Walsh is the preseason favorite to win the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC). The Cavaliers return 16 players from last year's team that went 13-5 overall and 9-1 in G-MAC play.

Graduate student Casey Decatur (Apollo Beach, Fla.) and sophomore Camryn Day (Hamburg, N.Y.) scored for Daemen, while freshman Blair Pfohl (Lockport, N.Y.) went the distance in goal and made six saves.

Walsh scored six unanswered goals in the first eight minutes of the game and the Cavaliers took a 14-0 lead into halftime. Walsh scored the first goal of the second half, before Decatur got the Wildcats on the board with an unassisted goal with 7:02 left in the third quarter. It marked the fourth goal of the year for Decatur, who was named the East Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Week yesterday after totaling seven points in the win over Lake Erie. Day opened the fourth quarter scoring when she converted a free position shot for her second goal of the year.

Walsh finished with a 32-13 edge in total shots and a 17-8 edge in draw controls. Day paced the Wildcats with four shots and also recorded a team-high five draw controls.

Daemen returns to action Friday (March 3) when it heads to Albany, N.Y. to face The College of Saint Rose in a non-league game.
