AMHERST, N.Y. – Five days after posting their largest win of the season in a 22-point victory over Queens, the Daemen University women's basketball team tallied a 79-54 win over Staten Island to mark a new season-high in total points and win margin. The Wildcats move to 13-4 on the season and 8-3 in East Coast Conference play, while the Dolphins drop to 7-14 and a 3-8 ECC record.
The Wildcats led for 90-percent of the game and shot a season-high 53-percent (34-of-64) from the field, while going 44-percent (10-of-23) from beyond the arc. Four Daemen players scored in the double-digits, with junior guard
Kaytlyn Matz (Johnsburg, Ill.) and freshman forward
Claire Pikett (Holland, N.Y.) leading all shooters with 15 points a piece. With tonight's win, the Wildcats add to their winning ways at home, moving to a 44-6 record at Lumsden Gymnasium dating back to the beginning of the 2018-19 season. In that time frame, the Wildcats own a 34-1 record in ECC play at home.
Daemen returns to Lumsden on Sunday afternoon for a noon matchup against District of Columbia.
IMPACT PLAYERS
- Claire Pikett tallied a career-high 15 points on the day, shooting an impressive 6-of-7 (86-percent) from the field and knocking down 2-of-3 from three in the game. The freshman forward totaled five rebounds, and added an assist, a block and a steal.
- Kaytlyn Matz totaled a season-tying high 15 points off 6-of-10 from the field and 3-of-4 from beyond the arc, while totaling a season-high six assists and pulling down two rebounds.
- Fifth-year forward Mickayla Ivy (Grand Rapids, Mich.) knocked down a season-high 7-of-8 (88-percent) from the field for 14 points, while totaling two rebounds, three assist, a block and a steal on the day.
- Graduate guard Paige Emborsky (Newfane, N.Y.) totaled 3-of-4 from beyond the arc and went 4-of-7 from the field to total 11 points in the matchup. She added five defensive rebounds and a block.
GAME NOTES
- Daemen has won all four matchups that they've played against Staten Island.
- After a narrow 13-12 lead at the end of the first, the Wildcats picked up the pace in the second quarter, outscoring Staten Island 23 to 10. Daemen shot 63-percent (10-of-16) from the field in the second and knocked down 3-of-7 from beyond the arc.
- Pikett led all Daemen shooters with 10 first-half points.
- The Wildcats held Staten Island's leading scorer Jenalyse Alarcon to just nine points in the matchup.
- Daemen finished with 41 rebounds in the game, marking the third straight 40+ rebound game for the Wildcats.
- Nine Wildcats tallied assists in the win, with Matz finishing with six of Daemen's season-high 24 assists.
- Daemen's starters and bench players almost equaled playing time in the matchup. The Wildcats totaled 32 bench points in the win.
- Freshman guard Shyla Montgomery (Brockton, Mass.) totaled three steals, marking the seventh game this season with multiple steals.
