AMHERST, N.Y. – Another home game, another home victory for the Daemen University women's basketball team as the Wildcats cruised to an 91-63 win over the University of District of Columbia on Sunday afternoon. Daemen scored their highest point total of the season and won their fourth straight game to move to 14-4 on the season and 9-3 in East Coast Conference play, while the Firebirds drop to 12-11 and a 7-5 ECC record.
Just two weeks after the Firebirds handed the Wildcats their largest loss of the season in a 21-point drop on Jan. 21, Daemen dominated on all facets this afternoon from the very start. UDC never led in the game. The Wildcats shot 58-percent (35-of-60) from the field and 62-percent (8-of-13) from beyond the arc in the game. Claire Pikett (Holland, N.Y.) and
Natalie Angeletti (Panama, N.Y.) each scoring 13 points. UDC sophomore Destiny Ryles was the leading scorer in the game with 28 points.
Daemen hits the road on Wednesday to face Roberts Wesleyan in the battle of I-90. Tip off is set for 6 PM in Rochester.
IMPACT PLAYERS
- Junior guard Alahna Paige (Rochester, N.Y.) finished with 11 points in the game, shooting 5-of-10 and banking a three pointer. Paige totaled four defensive rebounds, six assists and a steal. With her fourth assist tonight, Paige tallied her 200th career assist.
- Natalie Angeletti tallied her second double-double of the season with her 13-point, 10 rebound performance. Angeletti shot 67-percent from the field, going 6-of-9 along with a three, and added an assist to her stat line.
- After scoring a career-high 15 points on Friday night, Claire Pikett scored double-digit points for the second straight game with 13 tonight. Pikett shot 80-percent (4-of-5) from the field, knocked down a three-point field goal and drained all four free throws that she took, while pulling down seven rebounds as well as two assists, a block and a steal.
- Fifth year forward Mickayla Ivy (Grand Rapids, Mich.) totaled 11 points, shooting 57-percent (4-of-7) from the field and 3-of-3 from the free throw stripe. Ivy pulled down two rebounds, had four assists and two blocks.
- Junior guard Kaytlyn Matz (Johnsburg, Ill.) shot 80-percent (4-of-5) from the field and 2-of-3 from beyond the arc for 10 points, along with two rebounds, two assists and a steal.
GAME NOTES
- Daemen owns an impressive 45-6 record at home since the beginning of the 2018-19 season.
- The last time Daemen scored 90+ points in a game was against Bridgeport on Dec. 12, 2021 when they topped the Purple Knights 97-83.
- The Wildcats came out hot right away, putting together a 30-point first quarter while only allowing UDC to score 13. Daemen shot an unprecedented 86-percent from the field in the first, knocking down 12-of-14 shots along with two three-point field goals.
- Paige shot 100-percent from the field in the first, draining 3-of-3 with a three pointer to lead the Wildcats with seven points in the first.
- The Wildcats out rebounded the Firebirds 12 to 1 in the first quarter, with eight Wildcats pulling down rebounds in the first 10 minutes of play.
- All ten Wildcats that took to the court in the first half recorded points. Daemen led UDC 56-31 at the break.
- Daemen shot 69-percent (22-of-32) from the field in the first half and 55-percent (6-of-11) from beyond the arc. The Wildcats pulled down 23 first half rebounds compared to just 7 from the Firebirds.
- UDC came out of the half with a renewed sense of energy, going on a 14-0 run to bring their 25-point halftime deficit down to just 16 points.
- The Wildcats were outscored 23-13 in the third but maintained a 69-54 lead after three quarters.
- Daemen held the Firebirds to just nine points while scoring 22 in the fourth quarter. The Wildcats out-rebounded the Firebirds 16 to 3 in the final 10 minutes of the game.
- The Wildcats led by as much as 30 points in the game.
- Daemen totaled 48 rebounds, marking their second-highest total of the season, and finished with a season-high 37 defensive boards.
- Daemen finished with 40 bench points.
