WINCHESTER, Va. - The Daemen University women's tennis team won five of six singles matches en route to a 7-2 victory over Shenandoah University this afternoon in a match played at the Lowry Tennis Courts on the SU campus.
Shenandoah is a NCAA Division III affiliate and a member of the Old Dominion Athletics Conference (ODAC). SU returns six players from last year's team that went 10-5 overall, 7-2 in ODAC play and advanced to the semifinals of the ODAC Tournament. Today's match marked the second all-time meeting between Daemen and SU. The Wildcats posted a 5-4 win over the Hornets last year.
Daemen improved to 5-11 on the year, while the host Hornets saw their five-match winning streak come to an end and dropped to 9-7.
The match was played using NCAA Division III scoring rules. Daemen prevailed at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles and took a 2-1 lead into singles play. The Wildcats then prevailed in five of the six singles matches to secure the win.Â

Kitsa Scime (Williamsville, N.Y.) gave Daemen a 3-1 lead after she defeated senior Kelly Hudak, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. The Wildcats then took a 4-1 lead after sophomore
Yinett Del Leon (Cape Coral, Fla.) defeated sophomore Allison Cherwien, 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. Daemen secured the match after junior
Frida Rubio (San Diego, Calif.) outlasted senior Jahveesha Combs, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 singles.
Freshman
Carly Armitage (Rochester, N.Y.) and senior
Mackenzie Schayes (Honeoye Falls, N.Y.) also picked up singles wins for Daemen today. Armitage earned her seventh win of the year following a 6-4, 6-3 win over senior Lily Kimble at No. 4 singles. Schayes earned her second-straight singles win after defeating senior Jada Lewis 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles.
Rubio and Scime improved to 7-5 in doubles play this year after posting an 8-3 win over Combs and Kimble at No. 1 doubles. Del Leon and Armitage earned Daemen's other doubles point following an 8-4 win over Cherwien and Lewis at No. 2 doubles.
Scime improved to 13-6 in singles play this year and is now 16-7 in her last 23 singles matches dating back to the end of last season. Her 13 wins this season rank as the fourth most in a single season in program history. She has moved into the Top-10 in both combined singles and doubles wins (36) and career singles victories (21) among Daemen's all-time leaders. Rubio picked up her 23
rd career singles victory today, while Schayes earned her 19
th career singles win.
