Wildcats Drop Hard Fought 4-2 Decision To UDC In ECC Tournament Play

FLUSHING, N.Y. - The Daemen University men's tennis team saw its season come to an end today following a hard fought 4-2 loss to the University of the District of Columbia in the consolation match of the 2023 East Coast Conference Championship played at the Queens College Tennis Center.

Earlier this week the ECC announced a format change for this year's championship. Due to extenuating circumstances, the championship, which was originally scheduled to take place over two days, will now be a single-day event on Friday, April 21. Instead of the traditional semifinal format, Friday's action will see Daemen take on District of Columbia in a consolation match, followed by Queens and St. Thomas Aquinas, who were ECC Regular Season Co-Champions, meeting for the ECC title. Daemen is making its third-straight appearance in the ECC Championships.

Daemen, which was making its third consecutive appearance in the conference tournament, closes out the year with a 5-18 record. UDC finishes 6-12.

UDC opened the match by winning No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to secure the doubles point. The UDC team of seniors Louis Mangeon and Mauricio Corty defeated Daemen's top team of freshman Alex Lumanog (Albuquerque, N.M.) and senior Luis de Vuyst (Antwerp, Belgium), 6-3. The Firebirds earned the doubles point after senior Juan Henandez and sophomore Oskar Karos outlasted freshmen Rohan Chitanand (Den Haag, Netherlands) and Adam Pasierb (Lancaster, N.Y.) at No. 3 doubles, 7-5. With the doubles point decided, the No. 2 doubles match was left unfinished.

Daemen evened the score at 1-1 after senior Zachary Laplante (Ottawa, Ontario) defeated graduate student Jake Bedforth at No. 6 singles (6-1, 6-1). UDC opened up a 3-1 lead after Karos defeated Pasierb at No. 5 (6-3, 6-2) and Mangeon defeated Lumanog at No. 1 (6-1, 6-4). It marked the ninth-straight singles win for Mangeon, who was named the ECC Co-Player of the Year yesterday.

Daemen cut the lead to 3-2 after de Vuyst posted a 7-6 (9-7), 6-4 win over junior Antonio Simo Durall at No. 2 singles, but the Firebirds secured the match after Corty outlasted senior Phillip Vance (Orchard Park, N.Y.) at No. 3 singles (4-6, 6-1, 7-5). With the dual match fully decided, the fourth match between Chitanand and Hernandez was left unfinished.

Prior to the match Laplante was honored as the ECC's Elite 19 Award winner for men's tennis. The ECC announced the creation of the Elite 19 award in 2017, which is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade point average competing in each of the ECC's 19 championships. Laplante becomes the third student-athlete from Daemen to earn the honor this year, joing Phillip Ceccarelli of the men's cross country team and Natalie Angeletti of the women's basketball team.
