Wildcats Remain Perfect Following 7-0 Sweep Of D'Youville

Daemen Equals Best Start (3-0) In Program History

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. - The Daemen University women's tennis team opened East Coast Conference play with a 7-0 victory over cross-town rival D'Youville University this afternoon. The match was played at the Williamsville South High School tennis courts.

With the win Daemen improves to 3-0 overall, which equals the best start in the 12-year history of the program. The 2020-21 team also started 3-0. It also marked the ECC opener for the Saints, who fell to 0-2 overall.

Daemen swept all three doubles matches to earn the one point as per NCAA Division II scoring. Daemen's No. 1 singles team of senior Frida Rubio (San Diego, Calif.) and junior Kitsa Scime (Williamsville, N.Y.) posted a 6-2 win over junior Yuliia Kashtelian and senior Khushi Agarwal. Daemen's No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams both rolled to a 6-0 win. Junior Yinett Del Leon (Cape Coral, Fla.) and freshman Maya Chon (Wichita, Kan.) defeated freshman Maria Campisi and sophomore Paola Ermina at No. 2, while sophomore Carly Armitage (Rochester, N.Y.) and junior Emily Jablonski (Alden, N.Y.) were victorious at No. 3 over freshman Hannah Flynn and sophomore Yelizaveta Prokopenko.

Daemen prevailed in straight sets in all six singles matches to secure the win. Rubio defeated Kashtelian at No. 1 singles. Rubio battled to a 6-4 win in the first set, before completing the win with a solid 6-1 win in set two. Scime defeated Agarwal at No. 2 singles (6-1, 6-1) and Del Leon outlasted Campisi (7-6, 6-2) at No. 3 singles. Amitage defeated Ermina (6-3, 6-0) at No. 4, Chon defeated Flynn (6-0, 6-0) at No. 5 and Jablonski downed Prokopenko (6-1, 6-0) at No. 6.

MATCH NOTES
  • Daemen remained unbeaten (10-0) all-time against D'Youville
     
  • Scime recorded her 28th career singles win, which moves her into fifth place all alone among Daemen's all-time leaders in career singles wins. She is 5-2 in singles play this year and is now 23-9 in her last 32 singles matches dating back to the end of her freshman season.
     
  • Scime also recorded her 20th career doubles win today, which makes her just the eighth player in program history to reach that milestone.
     
  • Rubio recorded their 27th career singles win today, which ties her for sixth in career singles wins among Daemen's all-time leaders. Rubio also recorded her 26th career doubles win. She is four shy of becoming just the fifth player in program history to record 30 doubles victories.
     
  • Del Leon recorded her 15th career singles win today, while Armitage recorded her 10th.
     
  • Daemen heads to Pennsylvania at the end of the week. The Wildcats will play at Millersville on Sunday (Sept. 24) and Kutztown on Monday (Sept. 25).
