Wildcats Blank Blue Devils

FREDONIA, N.Y. - The Daemen University women's tennis team ran its record to 4-1 following a 9-0 victory over SUNY Fredonia this evening. Fredonia suffered its third straight loss and dropped to 1-6 on the season.

Daemen's 4-1 start is the best in program history after the first five matches, topping the previous best start of 3-2 set in 2021, 2020, 2017 and 2015.

The match was played under NCAA Division III scoring rules and Daemen jumped out to a 3-0 lead after winning all three doubles matches. Daemen's No. 1 singles team of senior Frida Rubio (San Diego, Calif.) and junior Kitsa Scime (Williamsville, N.Y.) posted an 8-0 win over senior Caitlin Snyder and junior Bernadette Gens. Daemen took No. 2 doubles, as junior Yinett Del Leon (Cape Coral, Fla.) and freshman Maya Chon (Wichita, Kan.) posted an 8-2 win over junior Sophie Olson and freshman Lucy Prevet. Daemen completed the doubles sweep after junior Arianna Lysiak (Depew, N.Y.) and freshman Katelyn Bechtel (Amherst, N.Y.) posted an 8-3 win over juniors Sierra Allen and T'Kaia Parker. It marked the first action of the year for Bechtel.

Daemen did not concede a point during singles play, as the Wildcats prevailed 6-0, 6-0 in all six matches. Rubio defeated Prevet, Scime downed Snyder, Del Leon got past Olson and Armitage defeated freshman Gabriella Farr. Freshman Maya Chon (Wichita, Kan.) and junior Emily Jablonski (Alden, N.Y.) played No. 5 and No. 6 singles for Daemen. Chon defeated Allen and Jablonski downed freshman Nastya Korsh.

MATCH NOTES
  • The matched marked just the sixth all-time meeting between Daemen and Fredonia. Daemen has prevailed in the last four meetings and owns a 4-2 advantage in the series.
     
  • Scime recorded her 30th career singles win. She ranks fifth among Daemen's all-time leaders in career singles wins. She is 7-2 in singles play this year and is now 25-9 in her last 34 singles matches dating back to the end of her freshman season.
     
  • Rubio recorded their 29th career singles win and ranks sixth in career singles wins among Daemen's all-time leaders.
     
  • Del Leon and Chon have won their last three doubles matches and are 3-1 overall.
     
  • Daemen returns to action Saturday (Sept. 30) when it plays at Division I Niagara University.
