Dolphins Hand Wildcats First Home Loss Of The Season, 71-62

AMHERST, N.Y. – The Daemen University men's basketball team saw its four-game winning streak come to an end following a 71-62 loss to the College of Staten Island this evening at Lumsden Gymnasium on the Daemen campus. The loss dropped to the Wildcats to 12-5 overall and 2-2 in the East Coast Conference. CSI improved to 10-6 overall and 4-1 in the league.

The loss also brought an end to Daemen's 16-game home winning streak, which dated back to last season. It ranked as the longest home winning streak in the East Region and is fifth longest among all NCAA Division II teams prior to tonight.

Daemen entered the game ranked fifth in the Division II College Sports Communicators (D2CSC) East Region poll, while the visiting Dolphins were receiving votes in the same poll.

IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Reserve guard Shemar Latty sparked the Dolphins to the win, as he scored 19 second-half points and totaled a season-high 24 points in just 17 minutes. Latty, who entered the game averaging just 3.2 points and had not scored in double figures all season, went 9-of-11 from the field overall and 3-of-5 from downtown.
  • Graduate student Bryce Waterman, who entered the game with a league-high 54 three-pointers, made 5-of-6 from downtown tonight and scored 19 points for CSI. Junior Messiah Mallory added 10 points, nine rebounds and eight blocks for the visitors.
  • Graduate student Joey Atkins (Watervliet, N.Y.) paced the Wildcats with 20 points and nine rebounds.
  • Sophomore Justin Glover (Buffalo, N.Y.) added 16 points and three assists, while senior Justin Hemphill (Buffalo, N.Y.) finished with 13 points, six rebounds and five assists.

GAME NOTES
  • It marked the first ever win for the Dolphins over the Wildcats, as Daemen had prevailed in each of the previous four matchups.
  • The teams entered the second half tied at 26, and the Dolphins outscored the Wildcats 45-36 in the second half.
  • Glover gave the Wildcats a seven-point lead, 45-38, seven minutes into the second half, but Latty would score the next eight points and his triple with 11:08 left gave the Dolphins a 48-47 lead.
  • Daemen trailed by just four points, 62-58, with just over three minutes left when Latty hit a three-pointer and then a jumper in the paint to give CSI a 67-58 advantage.
  • Daemen answered with a bucket by Hemphill to make it a seven-point game and CSI came up empty on its next possession. Daemen turned the ball over at the other end and Chris Clancy made two free throws for the Dolphins with 1:35 left to make it 69-60. Daemen would come no closer down the stretch.
  • The 62 points scored were a season low for the Wildcats, who entered the game averaging 81.6 points per game.
  • Daemen shot 42-percent (25-59) from the field overall and was just 4-of-10 from long range. The hosts canned 8-of-12 from the charity stripe.
  • CSI shot 54-percent (15-of-28) in the second half and finished 25-of-57 (44%) from the field overall. The Dolphins made 10-of-25 from downtown and made 11-of-13 from the charity stripe.
