Carpenter's Goal The Difference In Key Conference Victory

Wildcats blank Mavericks, improve to 5-1 in league play

AMHERST, N.Y. – A goal by sophomore midfielder Magda Carpenter (Lebanon, Conn.) in the 15th minute proved to the be the difference as Daemen University held on for a 1-0 victory over Mercy University in a key East Coast Conference women's soccer matchup this afternoon at Karrer Field.

With the win, Daemen evened its overall record at 7-7-0 while improving to 5-1-0 in ECC play. The win also keeps Daemen in strong contention for a top-two seed in the upcoming ECC Championship tournament, giving them 15 points in the league standings to keep pace with first-place Molloy University.

Mercy, which entered the game just three points shy of Daemen in the standings, dropped to 8-6-2 overall and 3-3-0 in ECC play.

HIGHLIGHTS
• Carpenter opened the scoring when she took a feed from junior forward Kylie Miranto (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) near the top of the box and launched a left-footed rocket to the upper left corner of the net, beating Mercy goalkeeper Anneliese Becker at the 14:11 mark.
• Carpenter's tally held up in a fairly even contest that saw Daemen hold a slim 13-12 edge in total shot attempts, while Mercy generated four corner kicks to Daemen's one.
• Junior goalkeeper Becca Schultz (Grand Island, N.Y.) made seven saves to record her fourth shutout of the season. Becker made four saves in a losing effort for Mercy.
