QUEENS, N.Y. – Queens College, the defending East Coast Conference Regular Season champions, defeated Daemen University, 6-1, in ECC women's tennis action Friday afternoon at the Queens College Tennis Bubble.
With the win, the Knights, who were also tabbed first in the ECC Preseason Coaches' Poll, improved to 2-0 both overall and in conference play while the Wildcats dropped to 5-3 and 0-2 in ECC action.
Queens opened the match by winning all three doubles matches to take the doubles point and a 1-0 lead in closely contested contests at all three courts. At No. 1 doubles, the duo of
Frida Rubio (San Diego, Calif.) and
Bella Bjerkan (Elmhurt, Ill.) dropped a close 7-5 decision to Maja Makal and Saga Berggren while at No. 3 doubles, junior
Carly Armitage (Rochester, N.Y.) and
Stephanie Baier (Boise, Idaho) played Sakura Saito and Lydia Zafeiri to the very end, but lost in heartbreaking fashion, 7-6 (7-3).
In singles play, Rubio got her revenge against Makal, winning in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 10-5, at No. 1 singles. The victory marked her first three set win of the year and improved her overall record to 4-2. On the other courts, the Knights picked up wins on No. 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 singles to seal their 6-1 victory.
