Women's Bowling Secures Fifth at Mercyhurst Invitational

ERIE, PA. – The Daemen University women's bowling team won four of their five final matches of the Mercyhurst Invitational to claim fifth place. The two-day tournament featured nine other schools including William Smith, Kutztown, Niagara, D'Youville, Mount St. Mary's (Md.), Penn State-Behrend, Pitt-Bradford, Wright State and hosts Mercyhurst.
 
All four matches were scored using Baker Format and the final match of the day was Baker Format best-of-seven.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
• After dropping their opening match of the second day to No. 12 Mount St. Mary's (Md.), 1048-947, Daemen rattled off three straight wins, starting with a with an 868-848 win over Penn State Behrend.
• Down 349-336 after two games to the Lions, the Wildcats secured a 193-159 victory in the third game and never looked back en route to their first win of the day.
• Also against the Penn State Behrend, freshman Faith Oranye (Washington, N.J.) made her collegiate debut for the Blue and White.
• The Wildcats kept rolling in their next match, defeating Pitt.-Bradford, 861-833.
• Facing Wright State, the Wildcats jumped to an early 382-343 lead after two games and did not slow down and defeated the Raiders, 898-841. It marked the first win against a Division I opponent for Daemen this season.
• The win over Wright State was the Wildcats first against a Division I opponent since March 3, 2023, when they took down Long Island University, 878-847 at the Dezy Strong Classic. Their win against LIU also used Baker Format scoring.
• Daemen wrapped up the day facing East Coast Conference rival Kutztown in a Baker Format best-of-seven match, with the winner claiming fifth place.
• Kutztown and Daemen each earned a first-place vote in the ECC Women's Bowling Preseason Coaches' Poll, but the Bears were tabbed second with 66 points and Wildcats fourth with 51.
• Tied 3-3 after the teams split the first six games, the Wildcats secured the 4-3 series victory with a 182-159 win in the seventh game.
 
UP NEXT
Daemen will head back to Erie, Pa. next weekend for the Grapevine Class from Saturday Oct. 12 through Sunday Oct. 13.
