Women's Volleyball Rebounds With 3-1 Win Over Molloy

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. – The Daemen University women's volleyball team bounced back from Saturday's loss at Queens and put together a comeback win at Molloy University, topping the Lions 3-1 (18-25, 25-19, 25-20, 25-23). The Wildcats move to 10-4 on the year and improve to 3-1 in East Coast Conference play while Molloy drops their first ECC match of the season and falls to 11-5 overall and 2-1 in conference matches.
 
Three Wildcat players totaled double-digit kills today as the Wildcats narrowly out-hit the Lions 55 to 50 and finished with a .311 hitting percentage. Daemen stood tall at the net today, with five different players recording blocks and four Wildcats posting multiple blocks in the victory as Daemen finished with eight blocks while holding the Lions to just four.
 
Daemen returns to Lumsden Gymnasium this week for a pair of home matches. The Wildcats will host D'Youville University on Thursday at 6:30 PM and Wilmington University in a non-conference match on Friday at 7 PM.

IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Junior outside hitter Nahirka Malpica (Caguas, P.R.) led the way offensively for the Cats with 16 kills and just three errors on 30 attacks for a .433 hitting percentage. Malpica added nine kills, four block assists and two assists for a team-high 18 points.
  • Graduate student outside hitter Abby Ryan (Orchard Park, N.Y.) posted her fifth double-double of the season with 12 kills and 10 digs while adding three aces and five assists.
  • Senior middle hitter Amelia Armstrong (River Falls, Wisc.) totaled 11 kills for a team high .526 hitting percentage after just one error and 19 attacks. The senior totaled one solo block and three block assists for 13.5 points on the day.
  • Senior Avery Dole (Summerfield, N.C.) and sophomore Molly Ryan (Orchard Park, N.Y.) split setting duties today and combined for 38 of Daemen's 50 assists. Dole totaled 21 assists and led the team with five aces while adding nine digs and three kills, while Ryan had 17 assists, one ace and three digs.
  • Graduate student libero Jasmine Brundage (East Aurora, N.Y.) led the way for the Wildcats with 14 digs and added three assists and an ace.
  • Molloy's Kiarra Roth, who was named the 2024 ECC Preseason Player of the Year, led all players with 17 kills.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Wildcats dropped the first set, 18-25, after Molloy recorded 16 kills on 23 attacks for a .565 hitting percentage.
  • Daemen responded in the second, out hitting the Lions 14-10 in the set after Ryan totaled six kills and Malpica and Armstrong each posted three kills as the Wildcats took the set, 25-19.
  • The Wildcats and Lions battled throughout the third set. After the Wildcats tied it up at 18, Daemen went on an 8-2 run to the end of the set to beat Molloy, 25-20 after totaling 16 kills in the set.
  • Daemen opened the fourth set on a 12-4 run, but from there Molloy scored 10 of the next 11 after winning eight straight points to take a 14-13 lead. The Wildcats and Lions both went on runs late, but the Wildcats scored three of the final four points off kills from Malpica, Ryan and the game winner from Kate Trueblood (Granger, Ind.) sealed the deal for the Cats, 25-23.
  • The Wildcats have won 10 straight matches over the Lions.
