Men's Basketball Takes Down RV/#11 Charleston 70-57

AMHERST, N.Y. – The #14/RV Daemen University men's basketball team came back from a 21-9 deficit to topple RV/#11 University of Charleston 70-57 at Lumsden Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon to remain unbeaten on the season. Daemen moves to 3-0 while Charleston drops to 1-2 overall.
 
Four Wildcats tallied double-digit points in the victory and combined for 51 of Daemen's 70 total points. Daemen finished with 20 points off the bench. The Wildcats shot 40% (28-of-70) from the field and knocked down 8-of-28 triples while out-rebounding Charleston 45 to 28 on the day.
 
IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Redshirt senior forward Justin Hemphill (Buffalo, N.Y.) posted a double-double for the first time this season after led all players with 17 points while shooting 50% (6-of-12) from the field and added 13 rebounds – nine defensive boards – three assists and two blocks.
  • The Wildcats' leading scorer through three games, redshirt sophomore Benjamin Bill (Hamburg, N.Y.) tallied his third consecutive game in the double figures with 12 off six field goals and earned his first career double-double, pulling down 10 boards – six defensive rebounds – and added two steals.
  • Junior guard Justin Glover (Buffalo, N.Y.) posted 12 points, shooting 45.5% from the field (5-of-11) and going 1-of-3 beyond the arc while pulling down an offensive rebound, two assists and one steal.
  • Graduate student guard Ryan Salzberg (Manlius, N.Y.) totaled 10 points after banking four field goals, two triples and pulling down four rebounds, two assists, one block and one steal. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Both teams traded points to open up the game until Charleston scored 16 of the next 18 to double up the Cats, 21-9, through the first 10 minutes of the half. Heath stopped the Golden Eagles run with a long-range jumper and Daemen put together a 9-3 run off a pair of Hemphill layups and a triple from Salzberg to bring the game within six, 24-18.
  • In the final five minutes of the first half, Daemen scored seven unanswered to make it a one-point game, 26-25, and finished out the half keeping it within one, 31-30, after a triple from Glover with 16 seconds left on the clock. The Wildcats shot 35% from the field in the first half while Charleston banked 12-of-24 in the first 20 minutes of play.
  • The Wildcats and Golden Eagles went point for point to kick off the second half until five minutes in when Andrew Mason (Webster, N.Y.) knocked down a triple and Bill added a layup off an offensive board to give the Cats their largest lead of the game, 41-37.
  • Daemen remained on top throughout the rest of the game despite pressure from Charleston throughout the second half and took a 10-point lead, 56-46, over the Golden Eagles with six minutes left after a triple from Zach Philipkosi (New Hartford, N.Y.). The Cats finished the game outscoring Charleston 14-11 down the stretch, taking as much as a 14-point lead in the final seconds of the game.
GAME NOTES
  • Daemen was tabbed first in the East Region in the Division II College Sports Communicators (D2CSC) Poll and 14th in the first D2CSC National Poll of the season. The 14th place ranking marked the first time the Wildcats have been ranked within the top 25 of any national polls since February 2022. Daemen is also receiving votes in the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Top-25.
  • Today marked the first meeting between the Wildcats and Golden Eagles.
  • Down by as much as 12 in the first half, Daemen finished the game leading for over 19 minutes
  • The Wildcats were 8-of-28 from beyond the arc today with Mason leading all players with three triples.
  • Daemen has shot 40% or better from the field in all three games this season. The Wildcats tallied a season-high 55.7% field goal percentage against St. Anselm last Saturday, Nov. 10 after going 39-of-70 from the field. The Cats took 70 shots in back-to-back games.
  • The Wildcats tied a season-high 45 rebounds today and pulled down a season-high 20 offensive boards. Six different Daemen players got offensive rebounds in the game with Bill leading the way with six.
