AMHERST, N.Y. –
Claire Pikett (Holland, N.Y.),
Shyla Montgomery (Brockton, Mass.) and
Sophie Auer (Lewiston, N.Y.) combined for 38 points as the Daemen University women's basketball team beat Saint Anselm 55-49 in a comeback win on Sunday afternoon at Lumsden Gymnasium. Winners of their last three games, the Wildcats get to .500 on the year and improve to 3-3 overall while handing St. A's their second loss of the season as the Hawks drop to 4-2, snapping their four-game win streak.
Saint Anselm led for 70% of the game but Daemen's 21-point fourth quarter solidified the victory for the Cats who finished out the game scoring 11 unanswered points. The Wildcat trio of Pikett, Montgomery and Auer each scored in the double-digits tonight and totaled the majority of their points in the second half of the game today.
Daemen heads into the Thanksgiving break on a three-game win streak and will hit the road next weekend to play at Holy Family on Sunday, Dec. 1 in Philadelphia, Pa.
IMPACT PLAYERS
- Pikett scored a season-high 16 points today, going 5-of-12 from the field and leading the Wildcats with three triples. The junior forward pulled down a team-high seven rebounds and added a team-high five steals to her stat line.
- A 5-foot-6 junior guard, Montgomery tied a season-high 12 points off four field goals while adding five rebounds – three offensive boards – five assists, two steals and a block.
- Auer scored 10 points after leading the team shooting 50% from the field (4-of-8) and banking 2-of-5 beyond the arc. The sophomore guard finished with two rebounds.
- Junior forward Cecilia Lapertosa (Whitesboro, N.Y.) totaled seven points, five rebounds, four steals, a block and an assist.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- After scoring the first points of the game with a driving layup by Montgomery, the Wildcats trailed for the rest of the first until tying it up at 11 with 3:30 left in the quarter. A late triple from the Hawks put Saint Anselm up 14-11 after the first 10 minutes of play.
- The Hawks scored the first five points of the second quarter to take an eight-point lead over the Cats until Joline Raposo (Tampa, Fla.) stopped the run with a jumper from the blocks. From there, Saint Anselm scored seven unanswered to double up Daemen, 26-13. The Wildcats ended the half with eight straight Pikett points off a jumper and a pair of triples to bring it within five after two quarters, 26-21.
- Saint Anselm led by as much as seven in the third, but a scoring surge by the Wildcats in the final minutes of the quarter led to Daemen out-scoring Saint Anselm 13-7 in the third. Daemen spread out the points through six Wildcat players to take a 34-33 lead into the final quarter of play.
- After the Hawks opened the fourth quarter on a 13-8 run to lead by four, 46-42, in the first five minutes of the quarter, the Wildcats surged to the end of the game. Daemen scored 11 unanswered points in the final 2:30 of the game off points from Auer, Montgomery, Lapertosa and Danielle DiCintio (Somers, N.Y.) to take down Saint Anselm 55-49.
GAME NOTES
- The Hawks are ranked No. 10 in the East Region in the latest D2CSC Regional Rankings.
- Squaring off for the sixth time in program history, Daemen beat Saint Anselm for the first time today and moves to 1-5 all-time against the Hawks.
- Daemen shot just 33.9% (20-of-59) from the field today and went 7-of-24 beyond the arc.
- The Hawks outrebounded the Wildcats 42 to 29.
- Daemen took advantage of Saint Anselm mistakes, forcing 26 turnovers and scoring 29 points off turnovers. The Wildcats committed 12 turnovers of their own but that led to just five points for St. A's.
- Six players combined for 15 steals for the Wildcats, with Pikett leading the way with five stolen balls on the day.
- Daemen has won the past six games on home court and has won 29 of their last 30 games at Lumsden Gymnasium.
