Auer Drops 19 Points In Daemen's 55-53 Win At Holy Family

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Daemen University women's basketball team won their fourth straight game in a tightly contested 55-53 victory over Holy Family University on Sunday afternoon. The Wildcats, who opened the season 0-3, improves to 4-3 on the year and hands the Tigers their second straight loss as Holy Family moves to 6-2 overall.

A trio of Wildcats scored in the double-digits today, with sophomore guard Sophie Auer (Lewiston, N.Y.) leading all players with 19 points on the day. 11 of those points came in the third quarter alone. Daemen shot 35% from the field, banking 21 of 60 shots and 4 of 14 beyond the arc while adding 9 of 13 from the free throw line.

Today marked the final non-conference game before conference play begins for the Wildcats. Daemen will travel downstate to open East Coast Conference match ups on Friday, Dec. 6 when they take on Staten Island and then head down to the nation's capital to play at District of Columbia on Sunday, Dec.8.

IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Auer totaled a career-high 19 points after going 8-of-15 from the field and 1-of-2 beyond the arc while knocking down a pair of free throws. The sophomore guard pulled down three rebounds, three steals and one assist on the day.
  • Graduate student guard Danielle DiCintio (Somers, N.Y.) posted 16 points after tallying 6-of-13 from the field and shooting 3-of-8 for three. She added four rebounds – two offensive boards – a team-high five assists and three steals for the Cats.
  • Junior guard Shyla Montgomery (Brockton, Mass.) posted 10 points, with six of those coming off free throws. She added two field goals, six rebounds, one assist and two steals.
  • Junior forward Cecilia Lapertosa (Whitesboro, N.Y.) pulled down double-digit rebounds for the second time this season, totaling 10 boards – four offensive – along with two blocks, two assists, two steals and six points.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The first quarter was a shootout between both teams. Tied at 10 with just under 3:30 left in the first, Holy Family went on a 10-2 run, scoring eight unanswered to take a 20-12 lead in the final minute of the quarter. Daemen scored a trio of layups from Lapertosa and DiCintio – including an and-one buzzer beater layup from the graduate student – made it a one-point game, 20-19, at the end of the first.
  • Where the first quarter was high scoring, the shots were not falling in the second. Holy Family outscored the Wildcats 9-6 with both teams making just three buckets and zero made three's in the quarter as the Tigers took a 29-25 lead into the half.
  • Auer was the difference-maker in the third, scoring 10 of Daemen's 15 points in the quarter including the game-tying layup in the final 30 seconds to make it 40-40 going into the final quarter of play. The Cats shot 54.5% from the field in the third quarter and knocked down six of 11 from the field.
  • A combined 12 of the 28 points scored by both teams in the fourth quarter came off free throws. The Cats led as much as 46-40 early in the fourth after back-to-back triples from DiCintio and Auer, and from there it was a back-and-forth game between the Wildcats and Tigers. Auer banked a driving layup to take a 54-53 lead with just under two minutes left, and the Wildcats defense would stand tall in the final minutes. Montgomery knocked down a free throw with seconds left on the clock to seal the deal, 55-53.
