Four Wildcats Tally Double-Digit Kills In 3-2 Win Over Molloy

AMHERST, N.Y. – The Daemen University women's volleyball team topped Molloy University 3-2 (25-27, 25-20, 25-21, 22-25, 15-10) in a barn burner on Sunday afternoon to improve to 15-6 overall and 7-2 in East Coast Conference play. The Wildcats have won four straight matches. The Lions drop to 12-11 on the year and 3-6 in conference matches.
 
Four Wildcats hit in the double-digits today, with graduate student Giselle Giraud (Orlando, Fla.) leading the Cats with 15 kills. Molloy's Kiarra Roth, the 2024 ECC Preseason Player of the Year, led all players with 20 kills on 67 swings. Daemen out-hit the Lions 62 to 49 on the day and finished with a .191 hitting percentage.

Daemen will hit the road for their final double-header weekend of the regular season. The Cats will face Mercy University on Saturday, Nov. 9 in a 12 PM match and take on St. Thomas Aquinas College on Sunday, Nov. 10 at noon. 
 
IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Giraud totaled 15 kills on 39 attacks and added four digs to her 15-point stat line.
  • Junior outside hitter Nahirka Malpica (Caguas, P.R.) finished with her ninth double-double of the season, totaling 11 kills and a career-high 30 digs while adding two aces and one solo block.
  • Senior middle hitter Amelia Armstrong (River Falls, Wisc.) posted 12 kills with just two errors on 21 swings for a team-high .476 hitting percentage. Armstrong added two solo blocks, three block assists and three digs on the day to tie a team-high 15.5 points.
  • Freshman right side Payton Gaylor (Bowmanville, Ont.) hit a career-high 12 kills with just one error on 24 attacks for a .458 hitting percentage while adding a team0high three solo blocks, four digs and one block assist for 15.5 points.
  • Senior setter Avery Dole (Summerfield, Wisc.) posted a double-double for the fourth time this season with 27 assists and 12 digs. Sophomore setter Molly Ryan (Orchard Park, N.Y.) totaled 20 assists, a career-high eight aces and five digs. 
  • Graduate student libero Jasmine Brundage (East Aurora, N.Y.) totaled 15 digs, three assists, two aces and one kill.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Daemen and Molloy each tallied runs in the first set. With the Wildcats up 19-16 late, the Lions would tie it up at 22 and then finish off scoring six of the last nine points to take the first set, 27-25.
  • The Wildcats dominated the second set, leading by as much as nine (21-12) over the Lions. Molloy would score eight of the next 10 points to make it a three-point game (23-20), but the Wildcats finished off the set with a Molloy service error and a kill from Giraud to take it, 25-20. The graduate student Giraud tallied five second-set kills.  
  • The Lions opened the third set up 6-1, but Daemen would put together a 11-2 run off four Armstrong kills and three aces from Malpica and Ryan to take a 12-8 lead. The Wildcats continued with the lead throughout the rest of the set to win the third 25-21. Armstrong totaled seven kills in the set.
  • As Daemen did in the second, Molloy took a hefty lead over the Wildcats in the fourth, 22-16. Following a Daemen timeout, the Cats scored four unanswered off kills from Giraud, a Brundage ace and an attack error to make it a two-point game (22-20). But the Lions scored three of the last five points to win the fourth 25-22 and force a fifth set.
  • Molloy and Daemen fought back and forth to open up the fifth set. After switching sides with the Lions up 8-7, Daemen scored the next four off three kills from Gaylor and one from Malpica to take an 11-8 advantage and after one Molloy kill to break it up, the Wildcats scored four of the final five points with Malpica's back-to-back kills to end it, 15-10.
  • The Wildcats totaled 60+ kills for the fifth time this season.
