Wildcats Drop Match At Mercy

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. -- The Daemen University women's volleyball team snapped a four-game win streak with a 1-3 (23-25, 25-18, 26-28, 16-25) loss at Mercy University on Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats move to 15-7 overall and 7-3 in East Coast Conference play while the Mavericks improve to 13-8 and 6-3 in ECC matches. With one more game played than Queens College, the Wildcats are currently second in the league with two games left to play. The Knights sit alone atop the conference at 7-2 and have three games left to play this season. 

The Mavericks out-hit Daemen in three of the four sets and finished with 52 kills to the Wildcats' 44. Daemen totaled 17 service aces but had 14 errors from the service line. 

IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Graduate student right side Giselle Giraud (Orlando, Fla.) posted a team-high 13 kills with four errors on 23 attacks for a .391 hitting percentage. She added four block assists, one dig and one assist on the day.
  • Graduate student outside hitter Abby Ryan (Orchard Park, N.Y.) finished with a team-high 13 kills with just three errors on 26 attacks to hit at a .385 clip while adding five digs, three block assists, two aces and two assists for a team-high 16.5 points.
  • Sophomore Amelia Gonzalez (Juana Diaz, P.R.) totaled a team-high seven block assists while adding five kills. 
  • Senior middle Amelia Armstrong (River Falls, Wisc.) finished with five kills on 11 attacks for a .364 clip with just one error along with three block assists and two digs. 
  • Senior setter Avery Dole (Summerfield, N.C.) totaled 22 assists, two aces and one dig, while sophomore setter Molly Ryan (Orchard Park, N.Y.) totaled nine assists, four digs, three aces and one kill. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Wildcats handled the first set and held a 22-16 lead late while hitting zero errors in the set until Mercy scored nine of the final 10 points off four Maverick kills and three Wildcat attack errors. Mercy took the first set, 25-23, even after Daemen totaled 13 kills while hitting at a .313 clip. 
  • The second set was back and forth to start, but after tying it up at 14, the Wildcats went on an 11-4 run thanks to five Daemen service aces through to the end to take the second, 25-18, and tie the match up at one a piece. The Wildcats out-hit Mercy 13-7 in the set after tallying 22 attack attempts to hit at a .364 clip. 
  • Mercy led for the majority of third set until the Wildcats made it a one-point game, 21-20, late after an 8-5 run. Mercy took a three-point lead after back-to-back kills, but Daemen scored four straight to hit set-point, 24-23. The Mavericks would score five of the last seven points off three kills to take the third, 28-26, after hitting .333 in the set off 14 kills. The Wildcats had seven aces in the set.
  • The Mavericks dominated the fourth and led by as much as 11, 20-9. The Wildcats would stave off defeat by winning seven of the next 10 points, but the Mavs ended it with two points to close it out at 25-16 after out-hitting the Cats 16-6 in the set. 
  • Today's loss snapped Daemen's eight-match win streak over the Mavericks. This is only the fourth time Mercy has beaten Daemen all-time. The Wildcats own a 19-4 series record over the Mavs.

The Wildcats will play at St. Thomas Aquinas College on Sunday in their final road match of the regular season at 12 PM in Sparkill, N.Y.
