CO 37 34 71 Game Recap: Men's Basketball | 2/11/2024 5:40:00 PM | CONTACT: Tom McDermott, Director of Athletics Communications | tmcdermo@daemen.edu Late Run Lifts Wildcats To 79-71 Win Over Firebirds Andrew Mason Nets His 1,000th Career Point During The Win WASHINGTON, D.C. – Sophomore Justin Glover (Buffalo, N.Y.) scored a career-high 21 points and graduate student Joey Atkins (Watervliet, N.Y.) added 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Daemen University men's basketball team to a 79-71 victory over the University of the District of Columbia this afternoon at the E.B Henderson Sports Complex on the UDC campus. Daemen, which entered the game ranked fifth in the East Region by the Division II College Sports Communicators (D2CSC), improved to 17-7 overall and 7-4 in the ECC. The host Firebirds saw their three-game winning streak come to an end and dropped to 8-12 overall and 6-5 in the league. Daemen maintains its hold on third place in the ECC standings. IMPACT PLAYERS Daemen finished with four players in double figures. Glover, who scored 17 of his 21 points in the first half, went 4-of-8 from downtown and also totaled five assists. Atkins connected on 8-of-13 shots en route to his fifth double-double of the year. Senior Andrew Mason (Webster, N.Y.) scored 13 points—all of which came in the second half. He entered the game just two points shy of is 1,000th career points. He becomes the second Wildcat to reach 1,000 career points this season, as fifth-year senior Nick MacDonald (Amherst, N.Y.) also recently reached the milestone. Senior Dylan Fasoyiro (Houston, Tex.) added 12 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals for the visitors, while senior Justin Hemphill (Buffalo, N.Y.) chipped in eight points, seven boards, four assists, five steals and three blocks. Sophomore Eric Morgan, Jr. paced the Firebirds with 18 points, while senior Hartnel Haye added 15 points and 12 rebounds. GAME NOTES Daemen has now prevailed in the last 13 meetings between the two schools and the Wildcats own an 18-2 advantage in the all-time series. Daemen trailed 8-7 early on when a layup by Hemphill sparked the Wildcats on a 16-7 run. Two free throws by freshman Zach Philipkoski (New Hartford, N.Y.) midway through the first half capped the run and gave the visitors a 23-15 lead. UDC scored the next six points to make it a two-point game, 23-21, but the Wildcats later regained an eight-point lead, 32-24, following a Fasoyiro bucket with 4:39 lead before intermission. The Firebirds outscored the Wildcats 13-6 the rest of the half and the Wildcats took a 38-37 lead into intermission. UDC held a 57-50 lead midway through the second half, when the Wildcats rattled of 13 unanswered points. Two free throws by Hemphill with 5:16 left capped the spurt and gave Daemen a 63-57 lead. The Wildcats later took a 12-point lead, 73-61, after Mason swished a three-pointer from the top of the key with just over two minutes to play. Daemen shot 42-percent (27-64) from the field overall and made 9-of-29 from three-point land. The Wildcats canned 16-of-18 from the charity stripe. UDC shot 45-percent (27-of-60) from the field overall. The Firebirds made just 5-of-20 from downtown and connected on 12-of-18 from the charity stripe. The Wildcats forced 20 UDC turnovers in the contest and Daemen posted a 20-13 edge in points off turnovers. NEXT JUMP BALL Daemen begins a four-game stretch of home games when it hosts league-leading St. Thomas Aquinas College (Feb. 16) and Mercy University (Feb. 18) next weekend.
