Wildcats Top Saints 3-0 In Thursday Night Action

Zach Schneider Tallies 1,000th Career Kill

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The No. 20 ranked Daemen University men's volleyball team moved to 6-0 in Northeast Conference play with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-12, 25-15) victory over the D'Youville University Saints on Thursday night to win their eighth straight match and ninth match in the month of February. Daemen moves to 11-2 on the year, while D'Youville drops to 6-5 overall and 1-5 in NEC play. 

Six different Wildcats tallied kills as Daemen out-hit D'Youville 37 to 19 on the night, finishing with a .400 hitting percentage. On his seventh of 11 kills on the night, fifth year Zach Schneider (Lockport, N.Y.) tallied his 1,000th career kill in the victory, finishing with a match-high 11 kills and just two errors on 18 attacks for a .500 hitting percentage. D'Youville totaled 19 kills with 21 errors to hit at a -.027 clip in the loss. 

Daemen returns to Lumsden Gymnasium on Friday night to host Harvard University in a 6 PM match. 

IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Picking up his second straight NEC Player of the Week award this week, Schneider led the Wildcats offensively for the eighth straight match, hitting 11 of 18 with two errors for an impressive .500 hitting percentage while adding seven digs, one ace and one assist for 12 points in the win. Daemen's all-time kill leader (1,004 career-kills), Schneider becomes the first player in program history to cross the 1K mark. 
  • Senior opposite Cameron Milligan (Pavilion, N.Y.) finished with nine kills and three errors on 21 attacks for a .286 hitting percentage and led all hitters with 13 points after adding two aces, two block assists, one solo block and three digs.
  • Junior outside hitter Billy Wieberg (Grand Island, N.Y.) totaled six kills on 11 attacks for a .364 clip with six digs, two assists and one block assist.
  • The NEC's Rookie of the Week, freshman middle blocker Ondrej Arabasz (Jicin, Czech Republic) totaled five kills with just one error on six attacks for a team-high .667 hitting percentage and added one block assist and one dig on the night.
  • Junior middle Ethan Sturm (Lisle, Ill.) posted four kills and one error on eight attacks for a .375 hitting percentage while adding four block assists and one dig.
  • Fifth year setter Sean Califf (Oak Park, Ill.) finished with 29 assists (9.6 assists/set), three block assists, two kills, two digs and one ace on the night. 
  • Sophomore defensive specialist Kyle Zelasko (West Seneca, N.Y.) added eight digs and one assist. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Wildcats are ranked 20th in the AVCA/NVA National MVB Top-20 poll, and came into this week ranked second in the weekly Off The Block Division II National Coaches Poll.
  • Daemen opened the first set with a 5-2 lead after two Milligan kills and a big block by Arabasz and Califf, and never relinquished a lead in the set, taking as much as a 10-point lead over the Saints. The Wildcats took the first set 25-16 after totaling 14 kills for a .591 hitting percentage with just one attack error in the first. Schneider and Milligan led the way for the Cats in the first with four kills each. 
  • D'Youville tallied the first two points of the second, but Daemen own seven of the next eight points to get out to a 7-3 lead early. After a pair of Saints points, Daemen went on another 9-2 run in the middle of the set to take a nine-point advantage, 16-7 over D'Youville. Kills by Sturm, Wieberg and Califf along with three Saints errors finished off the set 25-12 in the Wildcats favor. 
  • Kills from Schneider, Califf, Milligan and Arabasz lifted the to an 8-2 advantage early in the third set and held onto a large lead for the rest of the set, winning the set 25-15. Daemen finished the third out-killing D'Youville 11 to 5 for a .333 hitting percentage.
