AMHERST, N.Y. – The #20 Daemen University men's volleyball team snapped an eight-match win streak with a 3-1 (26-28, 25-20, 16-25, 20-25) loss to the Harvard Crimson on Friday night. The Wildcats move to 11-3 on the year with the non-conference loss, while Harvard improves to 7-5 with the win.
It was a game full of runs for both teams, with the sellout crowd at Lumsden Gymnasium keeping the energy electric high for all Wildcat points throughout the match. Daemen out-killed Harvard 59 to 55 on the night, but the Crimson totaled 13 fewer errors to finish with a .395 hitting percentage compared to .245 for the Wildcats. Zach Schneider (Lockport, N.Y.) finished with a match-high 19 kills and was one of three Wildcats to tally double-digit kills in the loss.
The Wildcats will host Thomas More and Tusculum in a pair of non-conference matches next week, taking on the Saints on Tuesday and the Pioneers on Friday. Both games will be played at 6 PM at Lumsden Gymnasium.
IMPACT PLAYERS
- After being named the Daemen Athletics February Male Athlete of the Month on Friday afternoon, Schneider totaled a match-high 19 kills with nine errors on 43 attacks for a .233 hitting percentage, adding two block assists and six digs to lead all players with 20 points.
- Senior opposite Cameron Milligan (Pavilion, N.Y.) totaled 13 kills with six errors on 32 attacks, adding six digs and four assists.
- Named the NEC Rookie of the Week for the second time this season, freshman middle blocker Ondrej Arabasz (Jicin, Czech Republic) tied a season high 10 kills to hit at a .318 clip along with a match-high three solo blocks, one assist and one block assist on the day.
- Junior outside hitter Billy Wieberg (Grand Island, N.Y.) totaled seven kills with just one error on 26 attacks for a .231 hitting percentage along with two assists, five digs and one block assist.
- Fifth year setter Sean Califf (Oak Park, Ill.) posted his third double-double of the season, totaling 39 assists and 10 digs as well as three kills and the Wildcats' only ace of the match.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Wildcats are ranked 20th in the AVCA/NVA National MVB Top-20 poll, and came into this week ranked second in the weekly Off The Block Division II National Coaches Poll.
- Harvard got after the Wildcats with a 7-2 lead early with five Crimson kills and led by as much as seven points in the first, 13-6, until the Wildcats put together a 5-1 run to bring the game within three and force Harvard to take a timeout. The Crimson and Wildcats traded small runs from there until Daemen brought the set within one point – 22-21 – after winning five of six points off three Milligan kills and a kill from O'Neill, and tied the game at 23 two points later after kills from Arabasz and Schneider. The first set went to extra points, but Harvard won five of the last eight points to take the first, 28-26. Five different Wildcats combined for 20 Daemen kills, with Milligan and Schneider each tallying six kills in the first. Daemen hit .300 in the first, connecting 20 kills on 50 attacks with 5 errors in the set.
- The Wildcats and Crimson traded points to open the second, with the biggest run each team took was three points until late in the set. Daemen tied the game up with a Schneider kill, then took a 23-18 lead after kills from Arabasz, Wieberg and Schneider and a massive solo block from Arabasz. The Wildcats won the second set, 25-20 after the Crimson served the final point into the net. Schneider tallied seven kills in the second while Milligan and Arabasz added three each.
- After a 10-10 start, Harvard went on a 15-6 run to take the third set 25-16. Daemen out-hit Harvard 12-11 in the set but committed seven attack errors which was the difference.
- The Crimson led by as much as six points early in the fourth set, 12-6. After three Daemen points, the Wildcats closed the Crimson lead to just three. From there, Daemen and Harvard took turns trading points to the end as Harvard won the fourth 25-20 to take the match.
