Wildcats Fall 3-0 To #2 Grand Canyon

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Facing off against their second straight nationally-ranked opponent in as many days, the Daemen University men's volleyball team fell short against #2 Grand Canyon University on Saturday, dropping the finale of the Harvard Invitational 3-0 (20-25, 16-25, 19-25) to the Antelopes. As one of four teams still undefeated on the season, GCU moves to 9-0 on the year, while the Wildcats fall to 3-2.

Daemen put up quite the fight against the Lopes, finishing with 29 kills to GCU's 32. The difference in the game was the errors, with Grand Canyon allowing just nine attack errors to finish with a .365 hitting percentage while Daemen committed 22 attack errors and 15 service errors and hit at a season-low .093 in the loss.

Fifth year outside hitter Zach Schneider (Lockport, N.Y.) totaled 10 kills with seven errors on 24 attacks for a .125 hitting percentage and was the only Wildcat player to tally double-digit kills.

The Wildcats will wrap up their Massachusetts road trip on Sunday with a 1 PM match at American International.

IMPACT PLAYERS
  • After a career-high night in the win over the Gauchos on Friday, junior outside hitter Billy Wieberg (Grand Island, N.Y.) accompanied Schneider as an offensive weapon tonight with seven kills and five errors on 17 attacks for a .118 hitting percentage. Wieberg added one assist, two aces, one block assist and one dig.
  • Freshman middle Ondrej Arabasz (Jicin, Czech Republic) totaled five kills with zero errors on 10 attacks to hit at a .500 clip, adding one ace, one solo block, two block assists and two digs.
  • Fifth year setter Sean Califf (Oak Park, Ill.) finished with 23 assists, five digs and one kill on the night.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Wildcats showed no fear against the #2 ranked team in the nation from the start. After taking a 6-4 lead over the Lopes early, GCU went on an 8-3 1 run to take a three-point lead over the Cats. Daemen would stop the bleeding and trade points with GCU, but another 8-3 run late in the first lifted the Lopes up 22-16. Daemen strung together a trio of points late to make it a 23-20 game, but a service error and attack error committed by the Wildcats would give the first set to GCU, 25-20.
  • Daemen committed six attack errors, four service errors, one block error and three reception errors in the first set, while totaling 11 kills for a .227 hitting percentage. After finishing with eight kills against UCSB yesterday, Schneider led the way for the Cats in the first set with four kills.
  • After a tied second set at seven a piece, the Lopes went on a 6-2 run to take a four-point lead over Daemen, taking advantage of four Daemen errors. After trading points in the middle of the set, GCU took their largest lead of the set with a six-point advantage, 18-12, over Daemen after three errors by the Cats. GCU would go on to win seven of the final nine points with the Lopes tallying four kills in those final points to take the second, 25-16.
  • GCU hit .409 in the second off 11 kills with just two errors on 22 attack attempts, while Daemen tallied 11 kills with seven errors on 32 attacks for a .125 hitting percentage.
  • Exchanging points throughout the beginning of the third, Grand Canyon pulled away in the middle of the set after a 9-2 run to take a 23-15 lead. Daemen won the next three points to make it a five-point game, but a kill from GCU and a Daemen attack error finished the match off, 25-19.
  • The Wildcats are now 2-7 all-time against nationally ranked opponents. Daemen picked up the program's second victory over a nationally ranked team on Friday night with a 3-2 win over #12 UC Santa Barbara in the opening match of the Harvard Invitational.
