SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Playing their final match before beginning Northeast Conference play, the Daemen Wildcats handled American International 3-0 (25-11, 25-17, 25-22) in the second meeting between the two teams in as many weeks. The Wildcats move to 4-2 in nonconference play, while AIC drops to 1-5 on the year.
Daemen hit .435 in the win, totaling 37 kills with just seven errors on 37 attacks. Sophomore outside
Kyle Zelasko (West Seneca, N.Y.) led the Wildcats offensively with nine kills for a .368 hitting percentage. The Wildcats held AIC to 27 kills on 82 attacks for a .134 hitting percentage.
The Wildcats will open NEC play at home on Thursday as they welcome crosstown rival D'Youville in a 6 PM match at Lumsden Gymnasium.
IMPACT PLAYERS
- Zelasko tallied a season-high nine kills with just two errors on 19 attacks today. The sophomore added two aces, three digs, one assist and one block assist for a team-high 11.5 points.
- Senior opposite Cameron Milligan (Pavilion, N.Y.) totaled six kills with zero errors on 10 attacks for a season-high .600 hitting percentage, adding three digs and one solo block in the victory.
- Freshman middle Ondrej Arabasz (Jicin, Czech Republic) added six kills with zero errors on nine attacks to hit at a .667 clip. The impressive freshman added four digs, two aces, two assists, and two block assists.
- Freshmen setters Jariel Giraud (Orlando, Fla.) and Bradyn Winters (Moon Township, Pa.) split setting duties today, with Giraud totaling 19 assists with three digs and one block assist while Winters added 10 assists on the day.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Wildcats hit .615 in the first set with 10 kills and just two errors on 13 attacks while holding the Yellowjackets to just six kills with eight errors on 24 attacks for a -.083 hitting percentage. Schneider led the way for the Cats with three first-set kills, while Wieberg and Arabasz added two kills a piece in the first with each tallying a perfect 1.00 hitting percentage in the first.
- After a late surge by the Yellowjackets, the Wildcats took care of business down the stretch, winning six of the last seven points to take the second set 25-17, hitting .444 while totaling 14 kills and two errors on 27 attacks. Zelasko led the Wildcats offensively with five second-set kills while freshman Jack Rooney (Lakeview, N.Y.) added four kills and Arabasz contributed three.
- AIC and Daemen traded points to open the third set, and after scoring five unanswered points, the Jackets took a 12-7 lead. The Cats put together an 8-3 run in the middle of the set to tie the game up at 15 a piece. Daemen would win four of the last five points to win the third and final set 25-22.
- Five Wildcats tallied aces today as Daemen finished with nine aces.
- The Wildcats move to 6-0 all-time against the Yellowjackets.
