Men's Volleyball Tops St. Thomas Aquinas 3-0

AMHERST, N.Y. – Another home game, another win at home!! The Daemen University men's volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-9) win over first-year program St. Thomas Aquinas on Friday night to move to 6-2 on the year. The victory marked the fifth 3-0 sweep for the Wildcats this season.
 
Coming off a program record-tying night where he totaled 19 kills against D'Youville in the Wildcats' Northeast Conference opener last night, fifth year senior outside hitter Zach Schneider (Lockport, N.Y.) posted a match-high 14 kills for an impressive .765 hitting percentage against the Spartans tonight. The Wildcats finished the match hitting .413 on the night after tallying 40 kills with just nine errors.
 
Daemen will resume NEC play next weekend with a pair of road matches, first taking on Sacred Heart on Friday, Feb. 16 and wrapping up the road trip at Merrimack on Saturday, Feb. 17.
 
IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Schneider hit 14 kills with just one error on 17 attacks, connecting for a season-high .765 hitting percentage while adding three aces, two digs, one assisted block and one assist.
  • Senior opposite Cameron Milligan (Pavilion, N.Y.) was the only other player to tally double-digit kills tonight, posting 12 kills with just one error on 27 attacks to hit at a .407 clip. Milligan led all players with 18 points after totaling four aces, five digs, three assists, two block assists and a solo block in the win.
  • Fifth year senior setter Sean Califf (Oak Park, Ill.) posted his second double-double of the season with 31 assists and 11 digs. Califf added one kill, three aces and one assisted block.

  • The Wildcats and Spartans traded points to open up the first, with the game getting as close as 10-8. From there, Daemen went on a 6-2 run to take a six point lead and held onto a large advantage for the rest of the set, leading by nine in the final points of the game to take the first 25-15.
  • Four Wildcats combined for nine first-set kills. Daemen totaled six aces in the first set.
  • After a back-and-forth start to the second, Daemen put together a 9-3 run to take a 19-13 lead over the Spartans and never looked back. The Cats topped STAC 25-16 in the second. Milligan led the way offensively with six kills while Schneider added five in the set.
  • The Wildcats and Spartans opened the third set just like the first two, but after STAC closed the gap, 8-5, the Wildcats went on a 17-4 tear throughout the rest of the set to hold the Spartans to single-digits with a 25-9 third set victory. Daemen posted 15 third set kills to hit at a .500 clip.
  • Daemen finished with 40 kills for .413 hitting percentage, holding the Spartans to just 19 total kills for a .043 hitting percentage in the match.
