SPARKILL, N.Y. -- The 2024 season comes to an end for the Daemen University men's tennis team after suffering a pair of 0-7 losses to the St. Thomas Aquinas Spartans in a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon. The Wildcats finish their season with a 5-14 record and 0-6 in East Coast Conference play, while STAC advances to the ECC Tournament this upcoming weekend in Flushing, N.Y. with a 13-6 overall record and a 4-2 record in ECC matches.
STAC swept every set in both matches this afternoon, but the Wildcats put up a fight in doubles play early in the first match of the doubleheader. Daemen's No. 1 doubles duo of
Juan Alvarez (Puebla, Mexico) and
Alex Lumanog (Albuquerque, N.M.) took their match against STAC's Ondrej Sramek and Ludovico Truffelli to a tiebreak after going 7-6, but the Spartans were able to pull away with the 7-4 tiebreak victory, and after winning No. 3 doubles, 6-2, over Daemen's
Lucas Garcia (Bogota, Columbia) and
Lasse Mergens (Bochum, Germany) to start the match, the Spartans earned the first point of the game as per NCAA Division I/II scoring rules. STAC went on to win No. 2 doubles as well, topping
Zachary Laplante (Ottawa, Ont.) and
Jayven Williamson (Minneapolis, Minn.), 6-1.
The Spartans won every singles pairing in straight sets in the first match of the day, but after sitting out of doubles play, sophomore
Rohan Chitanand (Den Haag, Netherlands) came in at No. 3 singles and took STAC's Alberto Espinosa the distance, but Chitanand ultimately fell 6-4, 6-1 in the final singles victory for the Spartans.
In the second match of the doubleheader, the Spartans won both second and third doubles in 6-0 fashion. The No. 1 pairing of Alvarez and Williamson won a set, but fell 6-1 for the STAC doubles sweep. Daemen and St. Thomas Aquinas played abbreviated singles matches this afternoon, with the Spartans winning all six pairings. Mergens fought STAC's Lennart Lehmann to an 8-5 finish in No. 4 singles, while Alvarez and
Lucas Garcia finished No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively, with an 8-3 score in both matches.
This was the final collegiate match for Daemen graduate student
Zachary Laplante, who finished the year with a team-high seven singles victories and 10 combined singles and doubles victories this season.
