Wildcats Fall To Mavericks On Senior Day

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Junior Leah Hansen scored seven goals and assisted on two others to lead Mercy University to an 18-5 victory over Daemen University in East Coast Conference women's lacrosse action this afternoon at Coyer Field on the campus of Buffalo State University. It marked the regular season finale for both teams.

Mercy, which is receiving votes in this week's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division II poll, improved to 8-9 overall and 5-1 in the ECC. The Mavericks will be seeded second in the four-team ECC Championship tournament and will host third-seeded D'Youville in the semifinals. Daemen, which came just one win shy of qualifying for the ECC Tournament, closed out the year with a 5-12 overall record and a 2-4 mark in the ECC.

Daemen women's lacrosse is in its second season as a varsity sport. Head coach Dominique Hamman returned 12 players from the inaugural 2023 roster and and welcomed nine newcomers to the 2024 roster. The Wildcats finished 7-9 in their inaugural season last spring. Mercy is the two-time defending ECC champion and returns several key players--including five 2023 all-conference selections--from last year's team that went 13-6 overall and 5-1 in ECC play.

Today's game marked the final career contest for senior Dana Bacher (Hamburg, N.Y.) and graduate transfer Aaliyah Deaton (Hickory, N.C.), and both players were honored during a pre-game ceremony. Bacher played in all 33 games (29 starts) over the past two seasons and leaves as the program's leader in career goals (69) and career points (82). Deaton joined the Wildcats this spring after spending her undergraduate years at Belmont Abbey College. She started 16 of 17 games this season and led the team in caused turnovers (17).

Sophomore Ella Bouley (Auburn, N.Y.) totaled two goals and an assist for the Wildcats today and closes out the year as the team leader in goals (32), points (45) and draw controls (48). Sophomore Avery Castner (Penn Yan, N.Y.) also netted two goals today and finished the year with 24 goals and 32 points. Senior Tatiana Wright (Stratford, Conn.) started in net for the Wildcats and made nine saves before giving way to sophomore Blair Pfohl (Lockport, N.Y.). Wright's nine saves today gives her 100 for the season. Pfohl made one save over the final 6:55. Sophomores Jenna Havert (Newark, N.Y.) and Kira Grzechowiak (West Seneca, N.Y.) both collected a team-high three ground balls for the Wildcats. Havert ended up with a team-high 33 ground balls for the year.

Seven different players scored for the Mavericks. Graduate student Sydney Corley totaled three goals, while sophomore Maeghan Callow added two goals and an assist.

Mercy held a 3-0 lead five minutes into the game and later took a 6-1 lead after senior Brooke Zarou scored with 1:42 left in the first quarter. Freshman Cadence Baran (Lancaster, N.Y.) cut the lead to 6-2 when she scored her 15th goal of the year off a pass from Bouley with just 15 seconds left in the frame. Mercy scored the first three goals of the second quarter and the Mavericks took a 12-4 lead into halftime. Mercy outscored the Wildcats 4-0 in the third quarter to secure the win.
