Wildcats Take Down Unbeaten Pitt-Johnstown In Five-Set Thriller

INDIANA, Pa. – For the second time in two days, the Daemen University women's volleyball team upended an undefeated team in the Crimson Hawk Classic, taking down unbeaten University of Pitt-Johnstown 3-2 (17-25, 25-19, 23-25, 25-17, 15-12) in the final match of the tournament on Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats, who are 4-0 in five-set matches so far this season, move to a 7-3 record after going 3-0 at the Crimson Hawk Classic. Pitt-Johnstown falls to 10-1 on the year.

Three Daemen players posted double-digit kills in the victory as the Wildcats totaled 67 kills. It marked the fourth time that the Wildcats have totaled 65+ kills in a match this season. Daemen held UPJ to just 46 kills for a .147 hitting percentage in the match.

The Wildcats head into East Coast Conference play this upcoming weekend as they return to Lumsden Gymnasium for the first time this season. Daemen will host Mercy University on Saturday, Sept. 28 in a noon match and take on St. Thomas Aquinas College on Sunday at 11 AM.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Wildcats and Mountain Cats traded points to open the first set, but UPJ went on a 7-1 run late and held on to take the first set, 25-17. Giraud and Malpica combined for 11 of Daemen's 13 first-set kills.
  • In the second set, the Wildcats were the ones with the run in the middle of the set, scoring 10 of 15 points to take a 20-15 advantage over Pitt-Johnstown. Daemen outlasted three set points to win the second, 25-19.
  • The Mountain Cats came back from behind in the third set after compiling an 8-1 run to go up 21-17, but the Wildcats scored six unanswered points off four kills to take a 23-21 lead. UPJ won the final four points of the set off a pair of kills and two Daemen attack errors to take the third set 25-23.
  • The Wildcats dominated the fourth set, jumping out to an 11-5 lead and never relinquished the lead, beating the Mountain Cats 25-17 to force a fifth set. Malpica led the way for the Cats with five kills in the set.
  • Daemen opened the fifth set on a 5-2 run after three Giraud kills and a kill from Malpica. Both teams went on runs throughout the fifth, but Daemen's four straight points to get them to an 14-8 advantage was too much for UPJ to come back from. The Wildcats won the fifth set, 15-12, to win their fourth consecutive match and go 3-0 in the Crimson Hawk Classic.
  • The Wildcats are 4-0 in five-set matches so far this season.
