FLUSHING, N.Y. –
Danielle DiCintio (Somers, N.Y.) scored 20 points as the Daemen University women's basketball team remained perfect in East Coast Conference play with a 64-44 win over Queens College on Sunday afternoon. The Wildcats improve to 10-6 overall and 6-0 in ECC play while Queens falls to 7-7 on the year.
Leading for all but one minute of game play, the Wildcats went off against the ECC's top defense in the Knights today, shooting 45.6% from the field (26-of-57) and 38% beyond the arc (8-of-21) while standing tall defensively themselves, allowing the home team Queens to shoot just 25% from the field and a meager 16% from three. Three Wildcats scored in the double-digits, with DiCintio leading the charge along with freshman forward
Ne'vaeh Buntley (Rochester, N.Y.) and junior forward
Cecilia Lapertosa (Whitesboro, N.Y.) chipping in 16 and 12 points, respectively.
The Wildcats will return to Lumsden Gymnasium on Saturday as they host crosstown rival D'Youville University in a noon match up to close out the first half of ECC play.
IMPACT PLAYERS
- DiCintio was hot today, shooting 58% from the field, with six of her seven field goals coming from three-point land. She scored 14 of her 20 points in the second quarter alone. The graduate student guard totaled six defensive rebounds, two assists and a steal on the night.
- Scoring in the double-digits for the fifth game this season and second straight, Buntley totaled 16 points after going 8-for-13 from the field while pulling down eight rebounds and adding three steals and an assist.
- After putting up 15 points and 16 rebounds on Friday night in the win at Molloy, Lapertosa totaled 12 points after going 4-of-8 from the field and knocked down four free throws on the day as well as six rebounds, one assist, one block and one steal.
- Junior forward Claire Pikett (Holland, N.Y.) led the Wildcats defensively with 12 rebounds – three offensive – and added a team-high four blocks along with four points, two assists and a steal.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Wildcats and Knights were evenly matched to start the first, trading points to open the game until Daemen scored six straight off layups from Buntley and Pikett to take an 11-6 lead in the first five minutes of game play. The Knights scored five unanswered from there to tie the game up at 11, and both teams scored a late layup to close out the first knotted up at 13.
- Daemen dominated the second quarter from the jump, scoring 10 of the first 12 points of the quarter for a 23-15 advantage at the TV timeout. The Cats kept up the intensity to the half and finished scoring 14 points while holding the Knights to just two to lead 39-17 at the break. DiCintio scored 14 points in the quarter off four triples and a driving layup as the Cats outscored Queens 26-4.
- It was a defensive battle in the third quarter as Queens narrowly outscored Daemen 10-6. The Wildcats were only able to bank two field goals in a pair of layups from Lapertosa and Buntley along with two free throws but maintained a hefty lead after 30 minutes of game play, 45-27.
- The fourth quarter was all about scoring. Daemen and Queens traded points throughout the entire quarter, and after shooting just 13% in the third, the Wildcats finished the fourth with 19 points and shot 54.8% from the field while putting the game away in the fourth.
GAME NOTES
- After dropping three straight games for the second time this season, the Wildcats have won back-to-back games and are the only remaining team in the ECC with an undefeated conference record.
- Shooting 45.6% from the field today, Daemen has shot 40% or better for three straight games and six times total this season.
- After struggling offensively in their games in the Hoops In Hawaii Classic on Dec. 20-21, the Wildcats have scored 60+ points in each of their last three games. Daemen is now averaging 60 points per game.
- The Wildcats are ranked 10th in the East Region in the latest Division II College Sports Communicators (D2CSC) Regional Poll, released on Monday. The East Region consists of teams from the ECC, the Northeast 10 and the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference.
- Winners of the past five ECC regular season titles and four of the past five ECC Tournament titles, Daemen is 96-10 in regular season conference games since the 2019-20 season. The Wildcats have win streaks against all eight ECC teams, with their longest being an 12-game win streak against Queens and a 10 game win streak against Molloy after beating both the Knights and Lions this weekend.
