AMHERST, N.Y. – Led by forwards
Ne'vaeh Buntley (Rochester, N.Y.) and Claire PIkett (Holland, N.Y.) who scored 19 and 18 points, respectively, the Daemen University women's basketball team escaped a nailbiter against crosstown rival D'Youville University on Saturday afternoon. The Cats remain perfect in East Coast Conference play with the 63-59 victory and move to 11-6 overall and 7-0 in conference match ups, while D'Youville drops to 4-12 on the year and 2-5 in ECC games.
The Wildcats outscored D'Youville in just one quarter today, but the 11-point advantage over the Saints in the third quarter and Daemen's eight made free throws in the final minute of the game were the difference today.
For the fifth straight game, the Wildcats shot 40% or better from the field, finishing with a 40.7% field goal percentage after going 24-of-59. The Cats were also 12-of-15 from the free throw stripe in the win.
The Wildcats will travel to Rochester to close out the first half of ECC play next weekend at Roberts Wesleyan in a 2 PM match up.
IMPACT PLAYERS
- Making her seventh start today, Buntley finished with double-digit points for the third game, leading all players with 19 points after shooting 61.5% (8-of-15) from the field along with a triple and two free throws. The freshman forward added five rebounds, one assist and one steal to her stat line.
- Pikett put up another stellar performance today, totaling 18 points after shooting 42.9% (6-of-14) from the field, banking two triples, and going 4-of-4 from the charity stripe. She led the team with six assists and added five rebounds – three offensive boards – and had one block and two steals on the day.
- Coming off the bench, freshman forward Morgan White (New Carlisle, Ind.) posted a season-high eight points in 16 minutes of play after tallying a pair of triples and two free throws along with a rebound, an assist and a steal.
- Junior forward Cecilia Lapertosa (Whitesboro, N.Y.) led the team with eight rebounds – two offensive boards – and totaled six points, one assist, one block and one steal.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Wildcats and Saints traded points to open the first quarter, until D'Youville put together an 11-3 run and took a 13-7 lead over the Cats halfway through the first. From there, Daemen scored eight unanswered off a triple from White, a three-point play from Joline Raposo (Tampa, Fla.) and a jumper from Auer to take a 15-13 lead. Both teams traded points to the end, and a layup in the final seconds of the quarter game D'Youville the 19-17 lead after the first 10 minutes.
- D'Youville outscored the Cats 15-6 in the first six minutes of the second after going 4-for-4 from three-point land. Daemen closed out the half with a 5-point run to bring it to 34-28 at the break. All of Daemen's 11 points came from Buntley and Lapertosa who scored seven and four points in the quarter, respectively.
- After the Saints took an eight point lead over Daemen to start the third, the Wildcats cruised to the end of the quarter, outscoring D'Youville 15-2 down the stretch in the final five minutes to give the Wildcats the 47-44 lead going into the fourth. Pikett led the way offensively with seven points in the quarter off a triple and two layups.
- D'Youville controlled the majority of the fourth, opening up with a 7-2 run to tie the game up at 49. The Saints led by five – 56-51 – with 2:41 left to play, but over the next minute, a jumper from Auer made it a three-point game, and a three-point play off a jumper and free throw from Buntley brought it within one, 57-55. The Wildcats nailed free throws down the stretch and a pair of Pikett free throws gave Daemen the lead that they would not relinquish for the final minute of play. All in all, the Wildcats drilled eight free throws in the last minute and finished off the nailbiter with a 63-59 victory.
IN-GAME NOTES
- Daemen moved up to eighth in the East Region in the latest Division II College Sports Communicators (D2CSC) Regional Rankings, as released on Monday. The Wildcats have been ranked in the region throughout the season.
- The Wildcats forced 19 D'Youville turnovers and earned 20 points off turnovers on the day while allowing just five points off Daemen's 9 turnovers.
- Daemen is the only remaining team with an undefeated ECC record this season.
- With the win, Daemen moves to 22-1 all-time against D'Youville.
