SPARKILL, N.Y. – The Daemen University men's volleyball team dropped a non-conference match at St. Thomas Aquinas College, 0-3 (20-25, 15-25, 21-25), on Saturday afternoon. Daemen moves to 4-3 overall while the Spartans move to 5-6 on the year and win their second straight match over a Northeast Conference team after sweeping D'Youville University last night.
The Spartans hit an impressive .536 over the Wildcats today, narrowly outkilling the Cats 36 to 34 on the day. The difference for Daemen was the errors; the Wildcats compiled 39 errors over three sets in the loss.
IMPACT PLAYERS
- Redshirt junior outside hitter Billy Wieberg (Grand Island, N.Y.) led all players offensively with 15 kills and just two errors on 23 attacks while hitting .565 and adding three digs in the match.
- Sophomore outside hitter Jack Rooney (Lakeview, N.Y.) totaled six kills on 10 attacks with two errors for a .400 hitting percentage along with one assist.
- Sophomore middle blocker Ondrej Arabasz (Jicin, Czech Republic) finished with five kills on 11 attacks and added one dig.
- Sophomore Bradyn Winters (Coraopolis, PA) and junior Kyle Zelasko (West Seneca, N.Y.) split setting duties today, with Winters totaling 17 assists with two aces and one dig and Zelasko posting 13 assists and added three digs and one block assist.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Wildcats and Spartans traded points to tie the game up at 10 but from there STAC went on an 11-6 run to lead 21-16. The Spartans took the first set 25-20 after hitting 15 kills with just one error on 21 attacks for a .667 hitting percentage in the first while holding the Cats to hit just .167 in the first.
- STAC continued with the heat from the first set and cruised to a 15-8 lead over Daemen early off 11 Wildcat errors. The Spartans again hit heavy in the second, finishing with a .571 hitting percentage in the set and topped the Cats 25-15 to take a two-set lead.
- The Wildcats played the third set close and trailed 18-19 late in the set. From there, the Spartans scored six of the next nine points to take the third set, 25-21 and sweep the Wildcats.
