Wildcats Swat Redhawks In 3-1 Road Win

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Daemen University men's volleyball team won their fourth straight match in a 3-1 (25-19, 23-25, 25-23, 25-11) victory at Roberts Wesleyan University on Thursday night. Daemen improves to 8-3 on the year while the Redhawks drop to 6-10 overall.

The Wildcats outhit the Redhawks 42 to 37 tonight while hitting at a .323 clip and holding Roberts to .071. Redshirt senior outside hitter Billy Wieberg (Grand Island, N.Y.) led all players with 16 kills while graduate student outside hitter Zach Schneider (Lockport, N.Y.) returned to the lineup for the first time since Feb. 8 and totaled 13 kills in the win.

Daemen will trek to Massachusetts next weekend to play at American International (Friday, March 7) and Merrimack (Saturday, March 8).

IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Wieberg led the Cats for the fourth game this season with 16 kills on 32 attacks while hitting at a .375 clip. The redshirt senior posted three assists, two aces, one solo block, one block assist and one dig for a match-high 19.5 points.
  • Schneider finished with 13 kills on 26 attacks for a .423 hitting percentage while adding seven digs, four block assists, one solo block, two aces and one assist for 18 points.
  • Senior middle blocker Maverick O'Neill (East Amherst, N.Y.) led the Wildcats with seven blocks – five block assists and two solo blocks – while adding five kills and three digs.
  • Sophomore setter Bradyn Winters (Coraopolis, Pa.) led the Cats with 32 assists, nine digs, two block assists, one ace and one kill.
  • Junior libero Kyle Zelasko (West Seneca, N.Y.) totaled 10 digs on the night.
GAME NOTES
  • Trading points to nine all, Daemen went on a 9-1 run off three Wildcat kills and two aces to take an 18-10 lead. The Redhawks mounted a late comeback but Daemen held on and took the first set, 25-19. The Wildcats hit .765 in the first after totaling 13 kills and zero errors on 17 attacks.
  • The second set was back and forth from the jump. Roberts took a 15-11 lead in the middle of the set, but the Wildcats tied it up at 17, and from there it was a race to the end. After a Wieberg kill tied it up at 22, the Wildcats compiled an attack and service error to give Roberts the 24-23 advantage and Roberts finished the second off with a kill, 25-23.
  • Much like the second set, the Wildcats and Redhawks went point for point in the third. Roberts tied the match up at 19, but from there the Cats won four of the next six points to take a 23-21 lead and closed out the match capitalizing on Redhawks mistakes and took the third set, 25-23.
  • The Wildcats opened the fourth set on a tear, taking a 9-3 lead early after three kills and an ace. The Daemen domination continued later in the set with the Wildcats leading by as much as 11 points, 20-9, and closed out the set with a 25-11 win to take the match, 3-1. The Wildcats totaled 13 kills in the fourth.
