Buntley And White Score Career High's In 72-53 Rout Over Spartans

SPARKILL, N.Y. – The Daemen University women's basketball team cruised to a 72-53 win over St. Thomas Aquinas College on Friday night to sweep the Spartans in the regular season for the first time since the 2020-21 season. The Wildcats improve to 15-6 overall and 11-0 in East Coast Conference play while dropping the Spartans to 4-16 overall and 2-8 in ECC games.
 
Led by solid shooting both from the field (43.5%) and beyond the arc (37.9%), the Wildcats outscored STAC in every quarter and never trailed in the game, leading for all 40 minutes tonight. Four of Daemen's five starters tallied double-digit points, and the fifth just one-point shy of double figures, to combine for 66 of the Wildcats' 72 points on the night.
 
IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Freshman forward Ne'vaeh Buntley (Rochester, N.Y.) finished with a career-high 21 points after shooting 50% both from the field (9-of-18) and beyond the arc (3-of-6) while being one rebound shy of a double-double with nine on the night. She added two steals, one block and one assist.
  • Sophomore guard Sophie Auer (Lewiston, N.Y.) tallied a double-double for the first time in her collegiate career, totaling 14 points and 10 rebounds while shooting a team-high 70% (7-of-10) from the field and adding four assists on the night.
  • Junior guard Claire Pikett (Holland, N.Y.) finished with 12 points after going 3-of-8 from beyond the arc and adding a field goal and a free throw. Pikett also doled out eight rebounds, four blocks and four assists on the night.
  • Freshman guard Morgan White (New Carlisle, Ind.) posted a career-high 10 points tonight, shooting 50% (3-of-6) from the field and banking 2-of-3 beyond the arc. The freshman added two assists and one rebound to her stat line in her sixth career start.
  • Graduate student guard Danielle DiCintio (Somers, N.Y.) totaled nine points all from three pointers after going 3-of-9 beyond the arc. She excelled across the stat sheet tonight with a season-high nine assists and seven rebounds.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Wildcats opened the game on a 5-2 run after a triple from White and a layup from Pikett and remained in the lead throughout the rest of the first quarter. Despite STAC bringing it within one halfway through the period, Daemen jumped out to as much as a nine-point advantage, 25-16, over the Spartans in the first and closed out the quarter up 25-19. Daemen shot an impressive 62.5% (10-of-16) from the field in the first quarter.
  • STAC brought the game within three early in the second, but the Wildcats scored seven straight points off a layup from Auer, a triple from Buntley and a pair of Trapper free throws, 32-23. With 2:33 left in the half, the Spartans scored five points to make it a four-point game, but Daemen went on a 9-0 run to close out the second quarter up 13. Daemen led 41-28 at the half after shooting 47% (15-of-32) from the field and 47% (7-of-15) beyond the arc. Buntley led the Wildcats offensively with 13 points in the first half while Pikett and Auer added 11 and 8, respectively.
  • Daemen and STAC traded points throughout the third quarter with the Cats narrowly outscoring the Spartans 15-12 and took a 56-40 into the final 10 minutes of play.
  • The Wildcats remained staunchly in control in the fourth quarter, leading by as much as 22 points. The Cats outscored STAC 16-13 in the final quarter of play and were led offensively by two triples by DiCintio. 
GAME NOTES
  • The Wildcats are ranked sixth in the East Region in the latest Division II College Sports Communicators (D2CSC) regional poll.
  • Tonight marked the seventh game this season that the Wildcats scored 70+ points. It was also the ninth game shooting from 40% or better for Daemen.
  • Daemen outrebounded STAC 48 to 37 tonight, pulling down 10 more defensive boards than the Spartans on their own floor. Eight different Wildcats recorded a rebound tonight.
  • DiCintio's nine assists ties Daemen's single-game assist record in the NCAA Division II era (2015-present). Raeann Stillwell recorded nine assists in two separate games in 2016.
  • Daemen is undefeated in conference play for the first time since the 2020-21 season when the Wildcats went 9-0 in ECC games.
