Men's Volleyball Bested By LIU

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Daemen University men's volleyball team dropped their second straight Northeast Conference match at Long Island University, 0-3 (15-25, 23-25, 19-25) on Saturday afternoon to fall to 9-9 overall and 0-2 in NEC action this season. It marked the second straight 0-2 start in conference play for the Wildcats, who dropped both matches at Saint Francis last season but ended the year ranked second in the NEC.

The Sharks out-hit Daemen 43 to 35 on the day and held the Cats to hit just .198 in the loss while LIU finished with a .352 clip. For the first time this season, sophomore middle blocker Ondrej Arabasz (Jicin, Czech Republic) led the Wildcats offensively and was the only Daemen player to tally double-digit kills on the day.

IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Arabasz totaled double-digit kills for the second straight match and led the Wildcats with 11 kills with zero errors on 17 attacks while hitting at a team-high .647 clip. The sophomore middle blocker added four block assists and three digs on the day.
  • Graduate student outside hitter Zach Schneider (Lockport, N.Y.) finished with nine kills, seven digs, one ace, one block assist and one assist.
  • Senior Maverick O'Neill (East Amherst, N.Y.) finished with five kills on nine attacks for a .444 clip and added four digs and two block assists.
  • Sophomore setter Jariel Giraud (Orlando, Fla.) totaled 29 assists, two digs and one block assist.
  • Redshirt sophomore Johnaustin Bly (Lancaster, N.Y.) finished with seven digs on the day.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • After Daemen won the first point of the first set, the Wildcats would not lead for the rest of the game, with LIU jumping out to a 15-9 advantage early. The Sharks scored five unanswered points to stretch their lead to 10 points, 21-11 and closed out the first with a 25-15 victory. LIU out-hit the Cats 15 to 10 and held the Wildcats to a .129 hitting percentage in the first set.
  • The Cats got out hot early in the second, and after scoring five unanswered points took a 12-9 lead. LIU tied the game up at 16 later, and from there it was a race to the finish with both teams trading points. After the Wildcats tied the game at 23, the Sharks scored the final two points of the set to win the second, 25-23.
  • The Wildcats tied the game up at three early, but from there LIU went on a 7-1 run to take a 10-4 advantage. Daemen brought the game within one, 16-15 later on, but the Sharks finished out the set on a 9-4 run to win the third 25-19 and take the match 3-0.

The Wildcats will play their final non-conference match of the season on Sunday at Harvard in Cambridge, Mass. at 1 PM.
