DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – In the first postseason game in program history, the #4 seed Daemen University women's lacrosse team fell to #1 seed RV Mercy College, 21-2, in the semifinal round of the East Coast Conference Women's Lacrosse Championship Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
With the win, the Wildcats ended the year with a 5-11 record while the Mavericks improved to 10-6 and advanced to the ECC Women's Lacrosse Championship Final where they will play the winner between #2 Roberts Wesleyan and #3 Molloy at home on Saturday.
Sophomore attacker
Shannen Calandra (Rome, N.Y.) and junior midfielder
Ella Bouley (Auburn, N.Y.) accounted for the two Daemen goals. Senior midfielder
Cameron Briggs (Buffalo, N.Y.) and junior midfielder
Kylie Miranto (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) each grabbed two ground balls while in net, freshman
Molly Evans (Fulton, N.Y.) made six saves.
Kayden Meyer led Mercy with a game-high five points and six goals. Maeghan Callow snagged eight draw controls while Ashlinn Kelly tied the game-high in ground balls with four. In net, Olivia LaMonica made four saves and tied the game-high in ground balls with four over 45 minutes of action to secure the win.
Down 5-0 late in the first quarter, the Wildcats picked up their first postseason goal in program history as Calandra found the back of the net at the 2:53 mark to get the Wildcats on the board. Mercy shut out the Wildcats for the remainder of the first half and commanded a 14-1 lead at halftime.
The Mavericks kept Daemen at bay for the remainder of the contest and secured their spot in the championship game. Bouley accounted for the second Daemen goal of the contest by finding the back of the net with 2:13 remaining in the game.
Mercy finished the contest with a 35-12 advantage in shots and 24-11 lead in ground balls.
GAME NOTES
• Today marked the first postseason game for the Wildcats in program history.
• The Wildcats have now played four games against schools either receiving votes or ranked within the top 25. It marks the most number of games in a single season against teams receiving votes/ranked within the top 25 in program history.
• Briggs snagged at least two ground balls for the ninth time this season.
