Glover Nets 1,000th Point As #2 Daemen Races Past D'Youville

AMHERST, N.Y. - Senior guard Justin Glover (Buffalo, N.Y.) scored a game-high 18 points, including the 1,000th of his career, to lead No. 2 Daemen to a 90-65 win over crosstown rival D'Youville in East Coast Conference men's basketball action at Lumsden Gymnasium today. 

The Wildcats, who suffered their first loss of the season Wednesday at No. 10 Gannon, rebounded to run their record to 21-1 overall and 9-0 in conference play. The win pushes Daemen to 12-0 at home this season, and extends their ECC winning streak to 31 straight games. 

D'Youville dropped to 4-13 overall and 4-5 in ECC play. 

The game was selected as the FloCollege Division II Game of the Week, putting the broadcast across FloCollege's social media platforms. 
 
IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Glover shot 6-for-11 from the field and canned 3-of-6 from three-point range today. His milestone hoop came on a fastbreak layup at the 12:18 mark of the second half, and he was greeted by a large ovation from the near-capacity crowd. Glover becomes the 30th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point milestone. 
  • Redshirt junior forward Phil Nwugwo (Rochester, N.Y.) shot 8-for-11 from the field and shared game-high honors with 18 points, while also hauling in a game-high eight rebounds.
  • Zach Philipkoski (New Hartford, N.Y.), Ryan Heath (Rochester, N.Y.) and Justin Hemphill (Buffalo, N.Y.) also reached double figures for the Wildcats. Philipkoski netted 16 points to go with seven boards and five assists. Heath connected on 7-of-9 field goal attempts, finishing with 14 points and four assists. Hemphill chipped in 10 points and a game-high six assists.
  • Elisha Warren and Dawson Matsell paced the Saints, finishing with 12 points apiece. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Daemen, wihch never trailed in the game, used a 26-6 run spanning both halves to seize control. Leading by just one point (28-27) approaching the latter stages of the first half, the Wildcats outscored DYU 17-5 over the final 4:44 with Glover nailing two trifectas and accounting for eight points in the spurt. Philipkoski, Heath and Nwugwo all scored in the opening minutes of the second stanza as the Wildcats jumped out to an insurmountable 54-33 lead. 
  • The Daemen lead ballooned to as many as 29 points at different points of the second half, and DYU was never able to make a run back into contention.
  • Daemen shot 56.9 percent from the field (33-for-58), including 66.7 percent in the second half (18-for-27). The Wildcats were an efficient 10-for-24 from three-point range (41.7%) and an uber-efficient 14-for-15 from the charity stripe (93.3%).
  • On the other side, DYU was held to just 37.3 percent shooting overall (22-for-59). Daemen entered the game ranking in the top 20 nationally for both scoring defense and field goal percentage defense. 

GAME NOTES
  • Daemen is ranked No. 2 in the latest NABC coaches' poll. The Wildcats returned 13 players from last year's 28-1 squad and have been in the top four in every poll this season.
  • The Wildcats were picked to finish first in the East Coast Conference preseason poll for the third time in the last four years. Daemen sits atop the ECC standings with a 9-0 record in league play.
  • Daemen improved to 18-0 against DYU in the modern era of the program (1986-present). Twelve of those meetings have happened since since DYU joined the ECC in 2020. 
  • Daemen was once again without the services of redshirt junior center Benjamin Bill (Hamburg, N.Y.). The 6-foot-10 Bill, a consensus All-American and reigning East Coast Conference Player of the Year, missed his 11th straight game with an injury. He is expected to return this season.
  • The Wildcats have won 35 of their last 36 home games, and are an astounding 134-20 at home during the program's NCAA Division II era (2015-present).

Daemen now awaits the arrival of the Roberts Wesleyan Redhawks who will come to Lumsden Gymnasium next Saturday, Jan. 31 for a 2 p.m. contest.
