Balanced Scoring Leads Wildcats Over CSI

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The No. 4 Daemen University men's basketball team improved to 24-1 overall and 12-0 in East Coast Conference play with a 89-75 road victory over Staten Island on Sunday. The Wildcats are 52-2 since the start of last season, including postseason results.

Six Daemen players reached double figures and combined for 83 of the Wildcats' 89 points. They shot 58% (36-of-62) from the field as a team while knocking down 8-of-18 three-pointers (44%). Daemen outscored CSI 52-34 in the paint and 17-6 in transition.

IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Junior Zach Philipkoski (New Hartford, N.Y.) tied for the team high in points with 17 on 7-of-12 shooting and posted a game-high six assists. He has scored 10 or more points in 24 of 25 games and 23 straight. Philipkoski's six helpers equaled his third-highest total of the campaign and marked his second consecutive six-assist performance.
  • Senior Justin Glover (Buffalo, N.Y.) also had 17 tallies. Glover finished 7-of-11 from the floor and 3-of-6 from distance. The guard has made at least three three-pointers in a game 11 times this year. He did so 18 times through his first three collegiate seasons.
  • Redshirt senior Justin Hemphill (Buffalo, N.Y.) contributed 16 points and a game-best 13 rebounds. It was Hemphill's eighth double-double of the year and sixth in his last 10 contests. Hemphill's 13 boards tied a season high.
  • Redshirt junior Benjamin Bill (Hamburg, N.Y), an All-American and the ECC Player of the Year last season, picked up 10 points in his third game back after missing the previous 11 with a lower body injury. This season's ECC Preseason Player of the Year went 5-of-8 from the floor and has made at least half of his field goal attempts in all 14 appearances this year.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Daemen started quickly. The Wildcats scored just two seconds after the opening tipoff, a layup by Glover on a feed from Bill. Through the first five minutes, the Wildcats outscored the Dolphins 10-5 and nailed four of their first six field goal tries. Daemen boosted its lead to nine (15-6) on a Hemphill lay-in with 12:30 left in the half.
  • Daemen's advantage hovered between seven and nine until just under 10 minutes remained. The Dolphins put together a 6-0 run in less than a minute to close the gap to 19-16. The Wildcats' lead shrunk to two points on a pair of occasions (23-21 at 6:26 and 26-24 at 4:45). Daemen closed the period strong, outscoring CSI 9-4 in the final 4:45 and taking a 35-28 lead into halftime.
  • The Wildcats started the second half with two unanswered triples in the first 45 seconds, both by Philipkoski. They put together a 10-0 spurt through the first four minutes of the frame and claimed a 45-28 lead, their largest of the contest to that point. The Dolphins remained in the game with a 12-8 stretch and trailed 53-40 with 13 minutes to play. The next three minutes saw Daemen outscore CSI 9-4 and go ahead 62-44 midway through the second half.
  • The Dolphins never got closer than being within 13 points down the stretch. The Wildcats' largest lead proved to be 20 (76-56) with four minutes remaining courtesy of a layup by Bill. CSI closed with a 12-7 run, but it was too late and Daemen cruised to a 14-point victory, 89-75.
