HOOKSETT, N.H. — Daemen University (5-3) dropped an overtime heartbreaker 16-15 at Southern New Hampshire University (4-4, 1-1) on Monday at Ouellette Stadium.
Trailing 11-7 at the half, Daemen mounted a mighty comeback, scoring six goals in the fourth quarter including the game-tying goal at 2:16 from
Shannen Calandra (Rome, N.Y.) to send the game into overtime. The Wildcats and Penmen battled to the very end of the extra period, but SNHU's Kailyn Cuddahy scored the game winner with 11 seconds left on the clock. Daemen dropped both road games in New Hampshire this weekend and moves to 5-3 on the year.
IMPACT PLAYERS
- Senior midfielder Ella Bouley (Auburn, N.Y.) continues to shine in her fourth season as a Wildcat, totaling four goals on nine shots on goal and added three assists, five ground balls and four draw controls for a team-high seven points.
- Shannen Calandra also finished with four goals -- including the game-tying goal late in the fourth to send the game to overtime -- on five shots on goal.
- Named the East Coast Conference Rookie of the Week today, freshman attack Sadie Schlesselman (Lancaster, N.Y.) was one of two Wildcats to finish with two goals, both unassisted.
- Sophomore attack Addison Pollutro (West Seneca, N.Y.) also totaled two goals on three shots on goals, adding one ground ball.
- Freshman goalkeeper Mia Caryl (Marcellus, N.Y.) finished with seven saves on 33 shots faced.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The game commenced with Pollutro scoring the first goal at 14:18, assisted by Kylie Miranto (North Tonawanda, N.Y.). SNHU responded promptly with a pair of goals to put the home team ahead 2-0. Calandra closed the gap at 6:16 with a goal assisted by Camryn Day (Hamburg, N.Y.). The Penmen extended its lead with two goals, but Schlesselman scored with 50 seconds remaining, ending the quarter with SNHU leading 5-3.
- The Penmen extended their lead in the second with three goals in the first four minutes of the quarter. Daemen responded with goals from Calandra at 10:09 and Pollutro assisted by Bouley at 5:37. After a timeout, Bouley scored from a free position, and Maria Salvo (Clarence, N.Y.) capitalized on a player-up situation at 1:21. SNHU secured the final goal of the quarter with 18 seconds remaining, bringing the Penmen up 11-7 at the end of the quarter.
- The Wildcats started the third quarter with a draw control by Bouley, who later assisted Mikayla Myer (Geneva, N.Y.) for a goal at 9:28, narrowing the score (12-8). SNHU responded with a player-up goal at 13:18. Bouley continued her impact for Daemen, scoring a free position goal at 8:15. Both teams saw multiple turnovers and defensive stops, with Daemen trailing 12-9 by the end of the third.
- Bouley opened the scoring in the fourth for Daemen with a player-up goal just seconds into play, bringing her season total to 19. SNHU responded promptly with a player-down goal at 14:24. Bouley continued to dominate, adding another goal at 11:16 while player-down, and assisting Calandra's goal at 6:43. Daemen's offensive momentum peaked with Avery Castner's (Penn Yan, N.Y.) goal at 9:52, assisted by Salvo. Despite the Wildcats' efforts, the Penmen managed to equalize at 14-14 with a late goal at 2:54, before Calandra's second goal of the quarter tied the game again at 15-15 with just over two minutes remaining to send the game into overtime.
- In overtime, the Wildcats' offensive efforts were thwarted by Southern N.H.'s goalkeeper, Nicole Mirra, who made critical saves against shots by Bouley and Salvo. Southern New Hampshire secured a narrow victory with a goal in the final seconds of the game with a Kailyn Cuddahy goal with 11 seconds remaining. SNHU took the game, 16-15.
